One of my favourite writers ever is Guy Gavriel Kay. I love the complex stories he weaves, the worlds he creates and the poetic language he uses.
But having read all of his books except two (River of Stars and Children of Earth and Sky), I noticed there are a few character descriptions, actions or plot devices he likes to repeat a lot. A LOT. They are what you could call his tropes.
So I thought: why not have some fun with it? It has probably already been done by someone somewhere, but nevertheless I introduce to you:
Grab a glass of your favourite beverage, grab any book by GGK, and take a sip every time:
A newly introduced character has red hair.
A character is described as being or looking intelligent (or synonyms thereof).
The two moons are mentioned (together or separately).
A character is having sex.
A character quotes poetry or sings a song.
A secondary character is shot with an arrow (doesn’t have to die).
A priest or priestess is being unpleasant towards another character.
The language is so cryptic and poetic it takes you a while before understanding what’s going on.
