keeping to the path*
is loneliness
Amateur translation by haikubynight🗾
*Translation assuming 「まつすぐで」 is actually 「まっすぐで」, meaning “straight ahead or forward”, but written using the large 「つ」 instead of the small 「っ」. This seems to occur in other places in Santouka’s work.
In this poem, I’ve interpreted the double meaning of one, finding loneliness on the physical road being a solo traveler, and two, finding loneliness in keeping to the path to peace and enlightenment for a Buddhist priest.

Dragonflies alight in shade
I go on
Amateur translation by haikubynight 🌳
Based on information taken from this article, the dragonfly was seen as a kindred spirit by Santouka in his wanderings. The dragonfly is an insect whose activity ranges from late spring to autumn, but is generally more associated with the autumn season. In this way, Santouka paints a picture of his surroundings—falling leaves, brisk winds, the coming of winter—while also recognizing himself, a Buddhist priest who asks for alms wherever he goes, in the prostrate figure if a dragonfly resting in the shade.

Today was chill.
Lo’s been writing all weekend after a block.
Lauren sent Lo and I a little package with letters, stickers, and drawings. It was amazing! ♡
Ate Santouka for dinner.
Walked around the park for two hours. By myself. No good pokemon out. : (
Ramen and Tonkatsu at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka
Everyone knows that I love Japanese food, most especially katsu and ramen. While I usually go to my favorite restaurants depending on my cravings, there are times when I just can’t decide whether to have a crunchy tonkatsu or a warm bowl of ramen. Thankfully, there is one Japanese restaurant that serves both on their menu, so I don’t have to choose between the two because I can have them both at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka.
With 14 branches all over the city, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka continues to be a popular dining destination for foodies like me who can’t get enough of ramen and tonkatsu. I usually visit their Trinoma branch which is located on the fourth floor at the open park area. They have other branches at Ayala Cloverleaf, Eastwood City, UP Town Center, Greenhills, Glorietta, Alabang Town Center, Nuvali, Tagaytay, SM Pampanga, SM Clark, SM Moa, City of Dreams, and Ayala Mall Feliz.
