This man, Gentlemen of the Jury, this man is intelligent. You have heard his testimony, have you not? He knows what to say. He understands the meaning of words. And it cannot be said that he acted without knowing exactly what he was doing?
I listened and realized I was considered intelligent. But I didn’t understand how the natural qualities of an ordinary man could be turned into overwhelming proof of his guilt.
At least, that was what struck me and I stopped listening to the prosecutor after that, until I heard him say: Did he even express any regret?
warnings: fluff, use of oc with very little physical description, afab!oc, actor!Jamie Flatters (oh and this was my first story, might be a little stiff)
In which she learns that sometimes, you just need pancakes at 1am on a rooftop.
˗ˏˋ ♡ ˎˊ˗
“Okay, what’s one thing you wanna do with your person when you’ve finally found them ?”
“Honestly ?”
“No, I really like the idea of you lying to me.” she deadpanned, looking at him straight in the eyes with a wry smile. “Of course honestly, dumbass !”
“It’s silly… I’d wanna eat pancakes, for dinner, at like 1am on the rooftop of a building..” He looked at her again, eyes meeting. “I told you, it’s silly” he said, laughing it off.
“No, it’s beautiful..”
Alis remembered it like it was yesterday, even if it was almost 8 years ago. They were sat on a bench in Battersea park, under a cherry tree. It was Spring, and being the hopeless romantic he was, Jamie had insisted they go see the blossoming trees after class, to which she had agreed, secretly really wanting to too.
“And you, what would you want to do ?” he asked back.
“Oh no, you’re the romantic one. For your information, i don’t even want to find someone : loss of energy, time and money.” Alis simply listed, counting every point on her fingers. “Plus, it’s too much commitment, you have to fully trust the other, and it’s also kind of a loss of freedom you know…”
“Alis ? You’re really ruining the mood here.”
“Yeah well, I’m not into it.” she shrugged.
And it was true, at the time. Technically, it was still true but.. only partially.
Alis was now slowly walking in Battersea park, alone this time. It was Spring again, the cherry trees blossoming, their petals falling gracefully to the floor with each gush of wind flowing through the branches. The girl delicately picked up a flower that fell, still whole, on her sweatshirt, putting it on a nearby part of the pond to take a cute picture before resuming her walk. She was going to Jamie’s flat, on the other side of the park and, while there was a subway station closer to his apartment, she deliberately chose to get out a station before, to see the cherry blossoms again. It had been so long since they were 15…
A lot of things had changed in 8 years. She stayed in London the whole time, and he went to Los Angeles for two years to act his biggest part to date. When he came back, they both graduated high school, and Jamie kept on pursuing his dream of becoming an actor, screenwriter and director, while Alis went to get her professional makeup degree. Then she finally got her diploma, he got to work on a project with Netflix, and life almost succeeded on pulling them apart.
But one thing that didn’t change was them, after all, they stayed the same, only maybe becoming a better version of themselves. And being them also meant being best friends, it had become part of their identity. They hung out when they could, they face-timed even when the time difference was of 8 hours, they texted whenever they had a break… Nothing could tear them apart.
Maybe there actually was one thing that changed about Alis, she did not stay completely true to her previous words. Because, yes, love didn’t interest her in the smallest, all she wanted was to get a job paid enough to finally have that apartment with glass walls and a panoramic view. But when it fell upon her… she did not have a real control over her feelings after all, something she came to learn. She tried to get rid of it, distancing herself all she could without it being weird, but how much distance can you put when you’re used to sharing every detail of your life constantly ?
Honestly, she despised that feeling. If she could, she’d go back to that day, two years ago, at her graduation, when Jamie scooped her up in his arms and twirled her around, when she saw those sparkles around him she had never seen and had always since then. She’d take a step back and simply hug him, and maybe nothing would’ve changed. Maybe that way she wouldn’t feel those annoying butterflies when around him, maybe his annoying voice wouldn’t sound like out of a symphony, maybe the annoying blue of his eyes wouldn’t seem so entrancing… maybe she wouldn’t miss him that much when he was away…
She had reached his building by now, sending Jamie a text to tell him before entering the code to get inside the lobby. Getting in the elevator, Alis looked in the narrow mirror to adjust her hair-claw, taking her time to make sure her hair was falling nicely.
“What am i even doing… girl, it’s your best friend, not your freaking love interest !” she whisper-shouted, slapping her forehead in the process. “Ouch- okay, harder than expected..”
She got out when the doors opened, revealing a Jamie waiting for her at his door.
“Hey trouble.”
“You really have to stop calling me that, it was once.” she said, flicking his cheek when passing by him to cross the door.
“Ow, usually people just answer ‘hey’ back but oka- Hey ! I thought i lost my sweater and you had it all this time ?”
She started untying her shoes. “And I’m not especially planning on giving it back so…” Alis looked over her shoulder, in his direction, before smiling innocently. “Thank you ~”
He simply sighed, muttering a short ‘I can’t believe we’re even friends sometimes’ before going into the kitchen. Alis followed behind him, helping him, gathering snacks to eat during the movie they planned on watching.
“Oh ? Your girlfriend’s tea isn’t there anymore ? Too bad, I really liked it.”
Maybe saying that word did hurt a little, just maybe. But she was used to it by now, because if Alis had been single since the beginning of times, romantic Jamie here surely wasn’t single that often. And in the end, she was the one playing psychologist when he broke up or was broken up with, which was really often considering he was barely ever single, long or not.
“My girlfriend’s t- Oh no, right, she moved out last month.” he stated, as if he was reading the weather report or something.
“What ? Why ?” She was most definitely confused as to why she’d move out a month after moving in.
“It didn’t work out in the end.”
“Oh, i really liked her tho…. How are you so chill about it ?” she asked, but continued before he could even answer. “Wait, no- why the f do i hear about it just now, exactly ?”
He chuckled. “Well, i don’t know… It didn’t feel important ? It didn’t exactly feel like usually, for some reason..” he hesitantly answered.
“You sound like a playboy.” she simply deadpanned.
“Maybe I am ?” Jamie replied, weirdly wiggling his eyebrows. “Anyways, let’s watch a movie before it’s too late.”
He took four bowls, skillfully maneuvering to get them safely to the table in the living room, Alis trailing behind him with drinks in her hands.
“You know, we’re not 13 anymore, i don’t have to go home by 10pm…” she grumpily answered.
“Yeah and I’m still not letting you wander in the streets in the middle of the night, but that’s a nice try.” He looked at the glasses, eyeing them with a titled head. “Huh, you’re not 13 but but you still choose to get a lemonade.”
“For your information, the beer you have in your fridge is gross, and i’m on a diet, so it’s either lemonade of plain water…”
“Diet ?”
She quirked an eyebrow. “Yeah, you want a definition ? It’s most of the time when you control what you eat in order to-”
“No I mean- why ?”
Alis sat on the couch, side eyeing him. “I don’t know, I guess I felt like it…?”
“Oh okay…”
“Flatters, you’re weird.” she joked, lightly punching his shoulder when he sat next to her.
“And trouble, you’re aggressive.” he fired back, laughing. “But we really have to choose a movie tho. Any ideas ? It’s your pick today.”
She turned to him with a smirk. “I come baring three options, Jamie.”
“Using the name already ? I’m scared.” he replied.
“And depending on the choice, we’ll even be able to watch two.”
“Mhm, come on, spit it out.”
“To all the boys i’ve loved before.” Alis grinned.
“How many times have you seen it just this year again ?” he mocked, running his ring-clad hand in his hair.
“Shut up, doesn’t change anything.”
“No really, i don’t get how you despise love so much and still watch this movie over and over again.”
“You say this every time, and every time i tell you : i don’t care.” She cleared her throat, smile slightly growing. “Second option : Blade runner 2049.”
He simply nodded and hummed in agreement, waiting for the third option.
“Avatar, the 2009 version.” Her grin was eating her whole face now.
“Nooo, you know i can’t watch that without cringing.” he dramatically put his face in his hands.
“You’re not even in it.”
“You get what i mean.”
“Yes. That’s why i chose it as the third option, because i knew you’d say no and we could watch the other two ~” she proudly explained.
He scoffed. “Can we at least start by Blade Runner ? So i can fall asleep to your sappy romcom ?”
“Sure. But you know you won’t sleep, you’d miss my voice-over too much.”
She put on the movie, starting it and getting comfortable in the couch. Alis pulled a knit blanket over her lap, one she had made years ago during her knitting phase and gifted him, before laying back on a soft pillow on one end of the couch and grabbing a bowl of cucumber slices to keep with her.
They spent the movie like that, as usual, commenting on the movie while their mouths were stuffed with whatever they had put on the table. When that one blue hologram appeared, Alis got up, doing the little dance with her while holding an empty glass, Jamie laughing from the sofa before he insisted on learning it too.
“Arms up one by one, then down one by one. When you get your arms up you step forward, when they go down you step back.”
“Like that?” he mimicked her own moves.
“Ooooh, dancing background huh ?”
“I don’t think you can see it with how stiff i look right now…”
After a few minutes, they went back to the movie, both of them now sitting close to each other in the middle. By the end, there no longer was any food on the table, only crumbs here and there.
“I can’t believe you didn’t even shed a single tear.” she said, sobbing loudly.
“And after all this time, i can’t believe you, the infamous medusa, can cry so much for a movie.” he chuckled at her state, cheeks stained in mascara and eyes red and swollen.
“I think i even prefer when you call me trouble…” she mumbled, sweeping away the tears with the back of her hand as she looked to the ground. Medusa was just a silly nickname people had given her in school, something about always looking emotionless and having a stone-cold heart.
“Sorry trouble, it just slipped…. Um, wanna order pizza ? It’s past dinner time now..”
And it in fact was. As she had came in pretty late, just around 8pm, it was now over 11pm. And with her stomach grumbling, pizza did sound good.
“Can I get my usual ?” Alis batted her eyelashes at him, in a somewhat convincing yet cringey manner.
“I swear, they’re gonna make fun of me again…” he whispered, getting his phone out of his pocket.
“And yet you order it every time… I declare you officially smitten.”
“Yeah, so smitten, trouble.” he said with a forced, unnatural scoff, a really faint blush covering his cheeks. But Alis didn’t pay attention, already waiting for her dear pizza to come as quickly as possible.
They both agreed on waiting for the pizzas to start the movie, giving them half an hour to spare. So while Jamie picked up some random book he was reading, Alis mindlessly put on a cartoon she was currently watching.
“… I even had a secret identity ! In public, my parents would tell people i was someone else’s kid …”
“Nooooo Brett, how can you be so genuinely precious…” she pouted at the screen, sitting on the floor with her back to the sofa.
“How is this precious ? He’s just pathetic.” Jamie had lost interest interest in his book long ago, simply leaning over her shoulder to look at her screen.
“You don’t even have context…”
“Well give me some then ?”
“Okay so Brett here is stupid, i have to admit it. And he comes from a rich family where they only recognize your worth if you’re a super smart being that like, finds a cure for cancer or run for elections or something.” she started explaining, really involved.
“Mhm.” he simply hummed.
“And well, he has a huge job, but he can’t talk about it because it’s some sort of ultra secret ‘running the world from the shadow’ kind of company, so they treat him like absolute trash.”
“Ow.”
“Yeah, ow. And so here, he’s meeting one of his super spy idols, and says he had that secret identity, blah blah you heard the rest. So he’s so precious because he’s just so innocent, even if his whole family disrespects him, he only sees the good.”
“Or he’s just dumb.” he uttered.
“I’m going to respectfully murder you.” Alis simply smiled, head tilted to the side.
That’s when the bell rang, announcing the delivery finally arriving.
“Saved by the bell ~” he said, playfully skipping to the door to put on his shoes. “I’ll be back in a few.”
Seeing her phone’s battery was almost empty, the girl started searching the apartment for a charger, opening drawer after drawer. After searching in every other room, she finally went to his bedroom. The girl didn’t really like entering there without asking first, it felt somewhat too intimate, even if they had known each other for over a decade. But she knew it only bothered her, after all, so she went in and started rummaging through the mess. Finally, she caught a glimpse of the white cable, throwing a fist in the air in victory before taking a hold of it. But something else on the same shelf caught her attention too : a picture, framed, of her and Jamie under the cherry trees on the specific day. It was a selfie, a poor quality one, but they both looked so happy and so young on that picture.
“Alis ? You left already ?” Jamie joked, closing the entrance door behind him.
“Nope, just looking for a charger !” she yelled from his room. “Didn’t know you kept that picture.” She came back to the living room with the frame in hand.
“Oh gosh, I’m sorry, my room’s a mess…” His eyes widened significantly. “But yeah, of course i kept it, it’s special..”
“What’s so special about it ?” she frowned.
“I don’t know, it’s just… special.” He bashfully smiled, cheeks slightly heating up, a change Alis noticed this time.
“Huh… Anyways, it’s pizza time !” she exclaimed, excitedly jumping towards the boxes. She came back to the couch shortly, setting the boxes on the table and sitting down in front of it. “Put on the movie now, we have all we need ~”
“At your service.”
The movie started playing, and so did Alis’ voice-over, in between bites of her topping-less pizza, enjoying quoting the movie after having spent so much time watching it.
“Here it comes…” Jamie simply said, recognizing the specific display on the screen of his best friend’s favorite scene. They were now back on the couch, cuddling under a few blankets ; Spring in London was no joke.
The girl moved slightly, now facing Jamie instead of the screen to deliver her monologue. “I’m not denying your right to put food on the table for your family, I just think it’s odd that a man would wanna become a gynecologist.” she started, before continuing, playing the part like it was written for her.
“You should’ve become an actor instead of a makeup artist, trouble.”
“What, and steal your thunder ? No, don’t worry, i wouldn’t do that to you.” she cockily replied, throwing her legs over his to get into a more comfortable position.
“Ouh, i’d feel so threatened…” Jamie scoffed before turning back to the movie. He mindlessly rested a hand on her thigh, rubbing small circles over the fabric of her sweatpants.
A move that sent her so far away that she didn’t even utter a single line for a few moments, earning her a look of incomprehension from her friend.
It was now further in the movie, the two had snuggled closer again, the boy’s hand no longer on her leg, even though she did feel like it still was.
“…I’m tired, can I use you as a pillow ?…” Kavinsky asked in the movie.
“Can I use you as a pillow ?” Jamie mocked, attempting to copy the line while getting his face closer.
“Are you trying to romance me, Jamie Flatters ?” she grinned, looking into his deep, mesmerizing blue eyes.
He squinted his eyes. “Is it working ?”
“Maybe.” Alis’ smile only widened, tilting her head to the side.
“Hm…” the boy hummed, and she could’ve swore his gaze had flickered to her lips for a split second.
She didn’t have enough time to process it before the movie became a mere noise in the background, the only important thing being his lips on hers. It didn’t last long, mouths just barely pressing against each other for a second, but it was more than enough to send the butterflies in Alis’ stomach flying in her whole body if that was possible.
When Jamie pulled back, her eyes were wide open, their cheeks a light shade of red. His mouth opened and closed multiple times before he finally spoke.
“I- um… I’m sorry, i don’t know what took over me, I just-” he stuttered, hesitant and overthinking every word before she cut him off.
Alis simply pulled him in, hands on his nape this time, and kissed him. Their eyes naturally shut, melting into each other’s embrace as Jamie wrapped his arms around her waist to bring her impossibly closer. She shifted her position, straddling his lap, fingers entangling in his hair and lightly pulling. He groaned softly at the feeling, and eventually broke away to catch his breath.
“That’s so much better than i ever imagined…” he breathed out let out.
“Imagined ?”
He gently cupped a side of her face in his hand, letting her hesitantly leaning in this touch. “I mean.. yeah..”
Alis tried to contain a small smile, hiding in the crook of his neck. After a long silence, she finally decided to roll off him, staying close but maybe not… that close, just so she could rest her head against his arm and continue watching the movie.
It seemed awkward now. They had done that an awful lot of times : staying up late to watch movies, eating pizzas late in the evening and cosying up on the couch under shared blankets. They had a close friendship, even physically speaking, but right now the proximity didn’t feel as it usually did.
They were now in the middle of the night, the movie had just ended, and Jamie’s shoulder was soaking wet with the girl’s tears after the ending scene.
“It gets me every time…” she whined in between sobs, trying to hold back tears that clearly did not cooperate.
“Oh, it definitely does.”
“Shut up…” Alis muttered under her breath, lightly slapping his arm.
The boy simply smiled, discreetly looking at her fondly while she dried her running eyes with the sleeves of her, or his really, sweater. From the corner of his eyes, he saw the clock on a wall.
“Oh shit, it’s way past 1am.”
She groaned. “I got a meeting tomorrow…. I think I should go.” Alis started getting up but he quickly caught her arm.
“You’re kidding right ? Ain’t no way I’m letting you outside at this time of the night.” Jamie firmly stated, frowning.
“But I have a work meeting tomorrow, and might I remind you I don’t have clothes here ?
“Then I’ll lend you mine, it’s not like you don’t already take them anyway.” He tugged at the hoodie’s sleeve.
“Alright… but I’m claiming your bed !”
“I saw that coming, don’t worry.”
They both started cleaning up, putting everything in the dishwasher and throwing out the pizza boxes and empty packages. Cleaning all the crumbs from the table, Jamie still in the kitchen, Alis couldn’t get her mind off what had happened. Right now, they were acting as if it did not even occur, like everything was as it usually was, when it was clearly not, and it was slowly starting to eat her up. So, gathering the little courage she had in her, she asked.
“Jamie ?”
“Hm ?” His voice was muffled by the wall separating them, before he came out of the kitchen and into her field of vision, drying his hands on a rag.
“Are we gonna talk about it ? Or just act like it didn’t happen ? Not that I’m blaming you or anything, if you don’t want to it’s fine. But, yeah…” She shyly looked at the ground while talking, Jamie not moving, seemingly deep in thought.
“Do you want to make pancakes ?”
Her head shot up, looking at him confused. ‘Make pancakes ?’ she thought, ‘But it’s super late and we’ve already eate- oh.’ Hope flashed on her face for a second.
“You have access to the rooftop ?”
He nodded. “And it still is 1am for thirty minutes… So ?”
“Depends.” She hesitated, weighing her words as too not seem as harsh as it could. “Have you done it with any of the other girls ?”
The boy scoffed, passing his tongue over his lips mindlessly before nervously chuckling. “That’s a way to put it… But no, I… I didn’t.”
“Well then okay, sure... But you cook.”
“Believe me, I don’t want you burning my kitchen up either.”
On those words, he went back to the kitchen while Alis just started reading on her phone. From the couch, she could hear the clatter coming from the kitchen, and soon after the light buzzing of oil on a frying pan. As much as she knew they kinda needed to talk, and as much as the idea of what to come had her heart hammering in her chest, it also made her oh so nervous. Because she had concealed those feelings for so long, to everyone else and to her. Because she had despised it for so long, that feeling that put her dearest friendship to the risk.
And because if he didn’t feel the same it probably wouldn’t ever be the same.
‘But he has to, right ? I mean, he kissed me first. But it’s also been a month since he hasn’t dated anyone, it has to be a record for him… Maybe he just feels lonely ? No. No, that’s literally the worst case scenario, it can’t be it…’
“Alis !”
“Hm ?” She snapped out of her thoughts, head turning in Jamie’s direction.
“Damn, third time’s a charm indeed… You coming ?”
He had put a plate full of pancakes on a furniture in the entrance, putting on his shoes and a plain blue hoodie.
“Oh, yeah, sorry.”
She followed after him, tying her shoelaces before going out and closing the door behind her. They took the elevator to the last floor, before going up some stairs in a janitor’s closet and finally open a last door to the rooftop.
“How do you even know that path ? And why do you have keys to that door that seems clearly restricted ?”
“Well, i got my ways.” he proudly answered, head held high.
“Wow, always so cocky, what would your fans say ?” Alis joked in answer.
Jamie simply chuckled, before leading her to an upper part of the roof where they could sit more comfortably. Their legs were dangling off it, still untouched plate of pancakes separating them. They were both looking at the scenery unfolding before them, London sprawled for them to see. For a moment they stayed like that, barely even moving, before Alis finally took a pancake in her hand and started talking.
“I like you.” she blurted out, before gulping loudly. Here, she had finally said it, she couldn’t take it out anymore. At least it wouldn’t burden her as much as it did. Hopefully... Jamie didn’t answer and she was still looking at the view, avoiding to look at him. ‘Yes, he was definitely just missing having someone…’ she thought, so she just continued. “And I’m so, so, sorry about it. I didn’t expect it when it happened, and I don’t plan on acting on it, don’t worry. So let’s just…” She sighed deeply. “Please, let’s just act as if it never even happened. It was a pure mistake and it was most definitely meaningless, and I’ll just get over all the feelings stuff anyways, you know it’s not really my thing.” Alis let out a little laugh at the end, one that only bore nervousness and gloom, her smile clearly shallow.
Finally, she turned to Jamie, seeing his eyes slightly widened and his body frozen, looking down at the busy street below. He had been listening intently, and deep inside he just felt too stunned to speak.
“Are you gonna say anything ?”
“Do you really think it was a mistake ?” he finally said, still looking down.
“Well I… I mean, it-” the girl stuttered, not quite catching where all this was going. After all, hope wasn’t an option anymore, not that it had ever been one.
“Because to me it wasn’t just a mere mistake, you know.” This time, he looked straight in her eyes when talking, one of the most serious look she’d actually ever seen on him. “If you really want to just be friends after that, fine. But I’m not saying I’d like that.” Jamie sighed too, before continuing, looking back down with his head in his hands. “You know what, fuck this, I’mma just say it. I like y- no, actually I love you. And I have for a really long time, you can’t even imagine how long…”
“..What ?” She was definitely dumbfounded, head tilted to the side while she tried to take it all in.
Jamie just scoffed. “Honestly, all those girls I dated ? It was to keep what I truly felt away. I knew I could never have you, you didn't like anyone and clearly didn’t want to, so I tried to suppress my feelings, and I found dating other people sufficient, for some time. But even after years, you see how that turned out.” There was a wry smile plastered on his face, carrying irony and suffering in its wake. “And Sophia, the girl that dumped me last month, remember her ? She broke up because even she, after barely two months of knowing me, already knew I wasn’t into her from the beginning but into you… So yes, what happened tonight wasn’t just a meaningless thing to me. It was impulsive and dumb, I'll give you that, but it wasn’t just an ‘i hate being single’ kiss.” Jamie seemingly hesitated with what to say next, creating a long pause in his monologue. “So yeah, if you want to keep it friendly after that, if you really don’t want any of that in your life, it’s fine, it’s not like I'm going to force anything. But just so you know, I won’t do it because I want to, but because I care about you and I don’t want us to break whatever we have over a kiss.”
There was a long minute where no words were exchanged. Jamie still looked down, not daring to even take a quick glance her way, while Alis’ brain was working both faster than it’s ever been and slower than it ever could.
“You used the L word.” the girl muttered, apparently still in shock.
“What ?” he frowned.
“Nobody ever L worded me in that way.”
“Is that really the only thing you got from the whole speech ?” Jamie was slightly annoyed now, honestly, that after pouring his heart out like that for the first time she only remembered his first words. He shook his head, finally looking Alis’ way with a confused and low-key upset gaze.
“I think I love you too, J..” she suddenly breathed out. And just like that, any trace of annoyance disappeared.
“You better not be pulling a joke on me right now, because that would be the furthest from funny.”
“No I- I think I just buried it so deep, to the point I couldn’t face it like I do right now but… But I think I love you ..” Their eyes met, and finally, it only felt right. “And honestly, I still don't think I really like the idea but… But maybe I don’t feel like it was meaningless either.”
“Well I clearly wasn’t expecting that.” he chuckled and she joined. But this time it wasn’t a pained laughter, it wasn’t sad or ache-y, it was… relief ?
“I wasn’t either, to be real… But since when do you.. L word me ?” Alis asked, hesitant.
“Wow, can’t even say it huh ?” the boy teased in return. It’s fun how the mood had changed in an instant, like some kind of silent agreement now that it was all out.
“I’m still processing okay ? Because unlike certain people, it’s my first time doing this.”
“Hey ! Continue your insinuations and I won’t tell you anything.” he exclaimed dramatically, acting offended.
“Sure. So ?”
“Really want to know since when I.. L word you, is that it ?” he teased back with a little laugh. “Well I'd say… Since a little before that day in the park ? The one I have a picture of.”
“Wow, you weren’t joking when you said long time. 8 years, Flatters, why did you even like me 8 years…” she muttered the last part, genuinely wondering how he could’ve had those feelings for so long.
“I don’t think i even have an explanation. And you ? Since when do you L word me ?” he amusedly asked.
“Oh fuck you.” she exclaims, turning away from Jamie before mumbling, “College graduation….”
“Your graduation ?”
“Who else ? You didn’t go to college.” she asked, rather rhetorically, confused but eyes betraying her amusement.
“Right… why though ?” He questioned back.
“I didn’t ask you that !”
“Doesn’t seem like a reason not to ask you, to me.. So ?” he said, looking at her intently.
She turned back to him, gazes crossing. “Fine. But get that smug look off your face.” she surrendered, clicking her tongue in annoyance. “I…. I don’t even know I guess ? It just- One moment you were running towards me with a huge smile and it felt normal, and the next you were twirling me around and I swear I saw sparkles around you. If it wasn’t already evident, I am embarrassed right now.”
“Yeah well, the red cheeks gave you away I guess.” Jamie teased, earning himself a playful smack across the shoulder and a scold while he just sat there laughing.
They admired the view for a little while then, taking in the scenery, the sight of the light showing through thousands of windows across the city so captivating. Jamie turned to Alis, delicately so he wouldn’t bump into her head, resting on his shoulder.
“Are we actually gonna eat those pancakes ? You’ve had this one in your hand for like… forever.”
“Jamie, they’re pancakes. Of course we’re gonna eat them.” the girl simply stated, carefully tearing the one in her hand in half. “Want a half ?”
“Yeah, thanks….” he dragged, taking the piece between his fingers. “I think I wouldn't even have believed it if anyone had told me I'd be finally sharing this 15 years old me fantasy moment with you, trouble..”
“Well then, shut up and just enjoy the moment Flatters.”
Weeeeeell what do we think ? I actually wrote this one on september 11 of 2023.... That's a weird date.
Btw I'm pretty sure that was my first oneshot ever, i just read over it a little for errors but, yeah.. sorry if it seems weird. But I still like it out here, I just have such an emotional attachement to it it's not even funny <3
(Is there even a jamie flatters fandom? is it still alive..?)
Summary-Influencer reader gose to London for a brand trip but runs into a actor that buys her a pack of cigarettes

parring- Jamie flatter x Fem! Reader
wc:400 words
Walking around London after press was never my intention really. Trust me, I was supposed to just go take photos for my Instagram showcasing my brand trip with Rhode.
I was with my friend Bailey, also known as Tsireya in the Avatar movies. “Okay, look—you need to get some cigarettes from a corner shop to make it seem very gloomy boarding school type,” she explained, holding the Canon G7X camera I had gotten her.
“You see, I would be. Wouldn’t that ruin the purpose of a clean girl brand?” I said while playing with my mittens as the cold breeze nipped at my cheeks.
Bailey rolled her eyes, adjusting the strap of her camera. “It’s just for the aesthetic. No one’s actually smoking. You’re just holding the pack. It’s about the vibe.”
I sighed, knowing she was right. The whole trip was about crafting a mood, a story to tell through images London’s grey skies, the cobblestone streets, the subtle melancholy of a girl caught between innocence and rebellion. Bailey had an eye for these things.
“Fine,” I relented. “But only if you promise to keep me from lighting one.”
She grinned. “Deal.”
We wandered down a narrow street lined with brick buildings, the kind that seemed to whisper stories of a hundred years. The corner shop was just ahead, a little box of warmth against the cold. I stepped inside, the bell above the door jingling softly.
The shop was cramped but cozy, shelves packed with everything from newspapers to sweets to the very cigarettes Bailey wanted me to pose with. I scanned the packs, feeling a little out of place. My fingers hovered over a plain white box, the brand Bailey had mentioned.
Suddenly, a voice broke through the quiet. “Need a hand with that?”
I turned to see a man standing by the counter, a warm smile tugging at his lips. He looked like he had just stepped out of a film set disheveled hair, a leather jacket slung over one shoulder, and eyes that sparkled with mischief.
“I... uh, just looking,” I stammered, suddenly shy.
He chuckled. “I’m Jamie. If you want, I can get that for you.”
I blinked, surprised by his offer. “That’s very kind, but I can manage.”
Jamie raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “You sure? It’s on me.”
I hesitated, then nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
He moved to the counter, chatting with the shopkeeper as he paid. When he handed me the pack, our fingers brushed, and a spark of warmth spread through my cold hands.
“Thanks, Jamie,” I said, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks.
“Anytime,” he replied, his smile deepening. “London can be a bit gloomy, but sometimes, it brings unexpected moments.”
I smiled back, feeling the strange thrill of a chance encounter. Bailey was already outside, camera ready, and I knew this moment would be perfect for the story we wanted to tell.
