A good photo starts with a good sandwich.

Put your tomato in a separate baggie from the rest of your sandwich, and finish assembling it at work/school. Soggy sandwiches photograph as poorly as they taste.

Get a panini maker. George Forman grills (and their ilk) work great.

Get a toaster oven. Go to your local Goodwill, you’ll probably find one for like $5.

Use them.

Not all bread comes in loaves. Your supermarket has rolls and specialty breads, they’re usually by the deli counter. Explore them.

Buy fresh ingredients, and try to throw a splash of color in your sandwich. Avocados, pickles, and spinach are all green, so throw in a juicy cherry tomato or a crunchy red pepper to give your sandwich a pop.

Less. Is. More. Especially if you’re making it now and packing it for later.

Let one ingredient be the star. A sandwich with 7 toppings usually drowns itself out with its own noise.

That said, once you’ve got the hang of it, don’t be afraid to throw in a monster sandwich tower every now and again.

Your phone’s camera can take SHOCKINGLY good pictures. All of my pictures are done with an iPhone 5. Take your time.

You have a good side, and so does your sandwich. Keep that in mind as you make it, and take the time to find it.

Know which part of your sandwich is the focus. It could be the red pepper from above, or a particularly gooey drip of melty cheese, or a fluffy pile of fresh lettuce, but every sandwich has a star.

Tap the area of the photo you want to focus on, then take it again but tap on a differently-lighted area of the photo (the difference will amaze you).

Set up your shot. Follow the rule of thirds.

Take wide photos if you’re going to crop it later. Give yourself room to work with.

Keep in mind the dimensions of the platform you want to post it on (Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram: 1x1. Twitter: 2x1.)

Play with Instagram’s photo editing tools. You can get incredible, stunning photos without touching the filters.

Take photos of your sandwiches at the sandwich’s level, not your eye level. Everyone sees sandwiches from your eye level, no one sees them up close.

Give your photo some dynamic depth (I usually put my can of seltzer in the background so it blurs out a bit).

Clean up the background of your shot. Move your pile of dirty laundry out of frame.

If you MUST take your photographs naked, check your shot for reflective surfaces first.
