Meet the Artist: Sandra Smith Sandra Smith is a painter and artist/educator whose practice explores place, memory and belonging. She paints landscape in the broadest sense, using painting as a way to reconstruct the spaces and environments she has lived in or moved through. Her work brings together drawing, geometry, mapping and painterly processes, combining structure with a strong sensitivity to surface, light and atmosphere. For Open Studios, Sandra will be showing work connected to two large landscape paintings inspired by Welwyn Garden City — one referencing the town’s industrial past and the other the geology and landscape in which it sits. The familiar Shredded Wheat silos, the Mimram valley and the surrounding chalk landscape are brought together through proportion, design and colour, reflecting Sandra’s engagement with the area during her time at Digswell Arts.
