Earlier this week my wife asked if we could set aside some time on Sundays to have family meetings with the two of us and just go over things from the week prior and upcoming. One of the main purposes was to have a consistent time to discuss plans for the upcoming week in the hopes that Iβll stop feeling blindsided by things I donβt remember talking about. I agreed that maybe having a consistent weekly meeting and reviewing our calendars together could be really helpful.
So we sat down today early afternoon and went over our plans for this next week and some other topics as well. She reminded me that she was planning to attend a writing workshop this evening at 8pm. We divvied up chores for the day and started doing our own things. I was like okay great, productive first meeting.
I go through the next 5-6 hours or so, just getting things done, doing some reading, some spring cleaning, some journaling, whatever. Around 6:30 I decide to take a shower and in my brain I was like βokay Iβll shower now before dinner so wifey and I will have the evening uninterrupted together.β I meander downstairs shortly after 7pm, all cozy in my fluffy robe, ready to hangout with my wife for the rest of the day, and just as soon as Iβm about to say, βso what show are we watching this evening?β,
she says, βhey so donβt forget that I have that writing class at 8pm tonight like we talked about earlier today.β
Me:
Guess who forgot! Goddammit! We literally had the whole meeting in the hopes that this would stop happening all the time! Itβs so fucking frustrating. I just canβt remember shit sometimes and I keep having these moments of being blindsided like this. It really upsets me every time and I have to try and adjust so quickly even though it feels like Iβm hearing it for the first time. It feels so shocking and jarring and also now I just feel emotional about it because I want it to stop happening!
We also have a shared family calendar but I always forget to check the calendar because I donβt know that thereβs anything on it I need to check. Maybe we should try to work on making a habit of checking it a couple times a day? I could set alarm reminders for that. That could help. Wife always keeps it very up to date. Clearly my assumptions that βIβll rememberβ or βthe message will get passedβ are NOT accurate. Siiiiiiiiigh.
Being autistic adds a whole extra layer to it too because it feels like Iβm constantly having plans changed on me all the time because I didnβt know what the plan was supposed to be. And having to shift gears so quickly SUCKS. Hopefully checking the calendar more often can be a useful way around this because Iβm tired of it.
