Back in 2004, Sam Liu was in the middle of a creative shift. He was moving from storyboarding and concept work into full-scale directing, and the character sketches he posted to Itchstudios give a snapshot of that transition. Itchstudios was an informal space where artists shared work and built community through process-driven uploads. Liu used it to quietly test ideas around form, movement, and mood before stepping into the spotlight with big projects for Marvel and DC.
The sketches themselves focus on gesture, anatomy, and perspective. You can see the early signs of his cinematic style taking shape in the way characters stand and pose. They are unpolished but purposeful, giving insight into how Liu thinks visually. You can trace elements from these pages straight into his later films like All-Star Superman, Crisis on Two Earths, and Batman: The Killing Joke.
