Today we commemorate the Holy Myrrhbearer Salome. Saint Salome was one of the women who attended to Christ through His ministry, following him all the way to His Crucifixion and burial. Along with Saint Mary Magdalene, she visited the Tomb of Christ only to find it empty, hearing the good news from the Angel. Saint Salome was one of the daughters of Saint Joseph, the Betrothed of the Theotokos, whom he had from his previous marriage. This makes Salome the step-sister of Christ and also she is the mother of the Holy Apostles James and John, and the wife of Zebedee. According to tradition, it was Saint Salome who was the midwife to the Most Holy Theotokos during childbirth, verifying the fact that the Theotokos was indeed a virgin before, during and after childbirth. Living a life of prayer and evangelism, Saint Salome reposed in peace. Pope Francis has declared a “Year of St Joseph” from 8 December 2020 to 8 December 2021. The Pope has also written a new Apostolic Letter, Patris corde (With a Father’s Heart) marking the 150th anniversary of the declaration of St Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church. Francis suggests that many ‘ordinary’ people who have quietly helped others through the pandemic are images of St Joseph, himself a ‘hidden presence’ who nonetheless played ‘an incomparable role in the history of salvation’.
