out of any marauders era characters, they make the most sense for me as a polyamorous couple. james "ego the size of a lake, but a heart to match it" potter, lily "love so strong it killed voldemort" evans, and sirius "i would hunt down your murderer and serve 12 years in azkaban for you" black. of course they all gave and received double the love <3

timeline in my head:

- sirius realised he was in love with james the night he escaped his home. he fell asleep safe in james arms and realised for the first time, he was free. he could love who he wanted now

- meanwhile james: yes i would lay down my life for lily and sirius both, yes i would die for them, yes my sun rises and sets on them. is that not casual?

- james begins figuring out how he feels for lily during head boy and girl duties, they began dating at the start of 7th year

- lily, after now spending more time with sirius, begins to fall for him. she tells james immediately, very nervous because she doesn't want to break up- she loves him too

- this is the catalyst for james realising he had always loved sirius as well, and had suppressed this. he's also confused because he has never not been in love with lily, either.

-whole time sirius has been pining for james, while still slightly panicking bc why had nobody ever told him lily evans was so incredible and gorgeous?? "no yeah mate your silencing charm held up fine! haha!"

- as he spends more time with her he realises he is falling in love with her. sirius is Not Happy about this. now he’s jealous of BOTH of them when jily kiss! (same)

- sirius is in the middle of another massive sulk, whacking bludgers around the pitch, when jily pop up behind him on a broom under the invisiblity cloak. he almost shits himself and the shock doesn’t get any better when they ask for a threesome. rip sirius’s heart

- james and sirius have absolutely no idea where to go from here. lily is way more educated than these two boys, and provides the solution :)

headcanons/random quotes

- lily, coming to a realisation sometime in 7th year: you know, there's something better than only ONE rich hot boyfriend….

- she opens mary and marlene's eyes to the light. cue half of hogwarts graduating class buying valentines for one of these two girls (casonovas of gryffindor tower who pull every gender effortlessly)

- effie found out within 6 months of each other that james bagged lily and then also sirius. she almost fainted from happiness both times

- whatever lily wants, lily gets. the house of black and potter cumulatively own like two thirds of gringotts. this means she gets to STACKK degrees debt free :)

- james and sirius are both healers (i love love love the last enemy james with his secret ambition to be a healer). lily is an inventor, pushing the boundaries of modern medicine by combining muggle and wizarding science. with the potter and black fortunes she can afford to make her medicines free for everyone, regardless of blood or financial status. she is also a kickass lawyer and artist :)

- all three of them open a rescue shelter for abandoned/stray animals. they name it Cadejo, which is a mexican myth james has grown up hearing about. there are 2 supernatural spirits. one is a big black shaggy dog, the omen of death. but it is not alone (🥹). there is also the white cadejo, that protects travellers and the vulnerable from harm and danger. (in some cultures the cadejo is a single big black dog that while appearing monstrous, is actually harmless <3)

- (bonus moonwater content because i physically cannot handle remus sad and alone when sirius is in a happy relationship with someone else) remus and regulus adopted a kitten and a particular vicious rabbit from the shelter, once they got married. the cat hates everyone except regulus. remus finds this hilarious

- touch starved sirius x jily who are always showing their physical affection towards him. boy who has only known the black of night x sunshine in human form i’m sick 🥲🥲💔 also these roles are reversed once lily and james’s parents die. sirius is their rock

- they loveeeee holi, mary has always reminded james of all the brightest colours. he's so excited to introduce it to her and she is enamoured with it- they look forward to it every year!!

- effie absolutely adores mary, they both have an intrinsic understanding of what it is like navigating the wizarding world as a woc. they love old movies and thrift stores, and catch up all the time. marlene is SO JEALOUS. james becomes increasingly concerned she is only dating him for his mother

- mary and fleamont develop a Sleekeazy line for curly hair. she does it once for james and it turns out he has curly hair!! (my fancasts for them are currently aryan simhadri and leah sava jeffries)

- james reads every book in fleamont's work library so he could learn exactly how to take care of mary's 4c hair. she doesn't have to do a thing anymore, he loves doing her routine for her (james “princess treatment? that’s the bare minimum” potter)

- multilingual multicultural icons. they are that one couple that is always travelling. mary loves tropical countries and chases the sun year round. but to james, she is the sun.

- definitely roommates at one point in their life pre relationship. they became closer friends, and started planning trips for the two of them. soon, everything was planned together- and they both came to the sinking realisation they didn't ever want to have to travel somewhere alone

- james builds her a house at their all time favourite viewpoint in pondicherry. he then proposed to her there. mary paints murals in every room (lots and lots of her and her muse, james <3)
