This feast day commemorates the attempted martyrdom of St. John the Evangelist in about 95 AD. John was arrested, bound, and brought to Rome from Ephesus upon the order of the Emperor Domitian. The Senate sentenced him to death. He was to be taken to the Latin Gate in the city of Rome where he would be placed in a giant cauldron of boiling oil. However, when he stepped into the oiling and remained unharmed, he was banished to the island of Patmos, where according to tradition, he set down the fourth Gospel, three Epistles, and possibly or probably the Book of Revelation.
