Today we remember our Holy Father, Benedict, the Father of Western monasticism, whose rule brings hope to those who would listen. After all, this is how Benedict began his rule, saying, "Listen carefully to the master's instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart.”[1] This statement is for our benefit. Because Saint Benedict's rule helps those who listen, that is, his monks and all Christians, live faithful lives. Therefore, each chapter he wrote brings about an important element of life, for each serves a purpose: for this is the beginning of wisdom, the same wisdom we hear in our first reading. Although true, Benedict remained humble for he knew his rule was only a beginning and says so in Chapter 73, “What page, what passage of the inspired books of the Old and New Testament is not the truest of guides for human life? What book of the holy catholic Fathers does not resoundingly summon us along the true way to reach the Creator?”[2] This is a good example for us. Like Jesus, Benedict lived what he taught. This we see in his rule, a rule that allows us to have hope. Therefore, let us heed our Holy Father’s rule so that on judgment day, we will be ready for our eternal reward of eternal life with Jesus as he sits upon his throne in the kingdom of heaven.
