Yea, tumblr digs this sort of thing, since there IS a need for more representation in media, and it would make sense for a story like Magi, which is pretty much just fantasy-Saudi Arabia. I guess the reason why people on pixiv don’t really care is that the Japanese just don’t really care about this sort of thing, though they DO have a history of being xenophobic at times, so that might be a factor.

(This is meh main blog, but I drew Morgiana in the alternate skin tones). Except for a few characters, mainly characters from Heliophat (and one of the girls Morg traveled with), most are really pale for their setting. I don't think Sinbad and Masur's skin tones (in the anime, I'd have to double check the manga) are dark enough to make that much of a difference - at least to me. Still, I think it's interesting to draw them like this, and the small tumblr response I find really exciting! (✿◠‿◠)
Oh yea, I totally understand that. It is kinda suspicious how pale the characters are in something like Magi, I get that. I kinda excuse the Kou Empire and the Reim Empire, since they’re analogous to China and Greek respectively. But for the characters like Morg, Aladdin, and Alibaba who are traveling a lot outside (be it by boat or through desert), the paleness of their skin is odd. But yea, I really dig the redesign you did for Morg! She looks really great! : D
