John Walker held the baby like he was afraid of startling her.
It was almost jarring, the careful way he supported her head, the way his shoulders stayed tense as if he expected someone to yell at him for doing it wrong.
He stood near the window where the afternoon light fell warm across the floor, rocking in the smallest, barely-there motions. The baby blinked up at him, curious, one fist curled against his chest.
From the doorway, you watched without announcing yourself. Bucky was beside you, silent, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but attentive.
Alpine sat on the back of the couch, tail still, eyes locked on Walker like she was evaluating his soul.
Walker’s gaze dropped to the baby’s face, and something in his jaw loosened. His voice came out quiet, almost embarrassed by its softness. “Hey there,” he murmured. “You got a good set of lungs on you, huh?”
The baby cooed in response, and Walker’s mouth twitched as if he didn’t quite remember how to smile without forcing it.

bruce has a habit of keeping his children under his wings, it wasn't really his because it was dick that snuck under his hood until he was clinging to him, but it's something that extended to everyone. it's automatic of his body to put his arm over his children to feel like he's protecting them, only to then remember that he's not in batman's suit but in bruce wayne's normal clothes and awkwardly walks away. bruce goes into an internal crisis every time one of his children says "i'm too old for this" or simply grows up. alfred is scolding all the bats for not letting bruce have his father moment.
he's also secretly praying that al ghul' s genetics don't catch up with damian because he's the only one who still fits in his arms and he will collapse when his little boy grows up.
