I'm realizing more and more I need the rhythm of seasons. In Florida, we don't really have them unless you count snowbird (tourist), pollen, lovebug, and hurricane. ⁠ ⁠ Then I remembered I have the rhythm of the Christian year. We're at a transition between the season after Christmas (Epiphany) and the season before Easter (Lent). ⁠ ⁠ The scripture that marks this transition is Jesus' transfiguration. Here's the prayer that came from reading that story again. ⁠ ⁠ You can read the story in Matthew 17:1–20; Mark 9:2–29; Luke 9:28–43; and 2 Peter 1:16–18.⁠ ⁠ How does the rhythm of seasons help you? I used to end my day falling into bed exhausted. I wasn't sleeping well. My monkey brain would continue to jump from problem to problem. My hamster brain would climb into the wheel to work on them all night long. ⁠ ⁠ I learned I needed a rhythm to start my day and a rhythm to end my day. I can't control much of my day but I can control the beginning and the end. Bookends! ⁠ ⁠ So I went in search of more spiritual practices to keep me grounded in God. More experimenting. More learning what works for me and what doesn't in this season of life. ⁠ ⁠ So far, I've learned I need to end my workday with some reflection questions. If I wait till bedtime I'm too tired. ⁠ ⁠ I'm also trying out moving/exercise later in the day. I still struggle with this. What do you like to do and how often do you do it? ⁠ ⁠ Once I'm in bed, it's time for pleasure reading, fun reading. This is different than the mounds of reading I do for work. ⁠ ⁠ Then its time for sleep. I now see rest as a healing gift. A gift I need every day. I aim for 7 hours a night. I used to wake up and hit the ground running. I'd jump on my email or social media and start the work hustle. ⁠ ⁠ It didn't serve me well. I felt off-balance and overwhelmed. I was working in my own strength rather than the Spirit's. ⁠ ⁠ This year, I'm trying something new but ancient. I'm intentionally starting my day with spiritual practices that keep me grounded in God. I can't control much of my day, but I can control this. ⁠ ⁠ I'm experimenting. I'm trying and trying again. I'm learning what works for me and what doesn't. ⁠ ⁠ So far, I've learned I need some sacred reading while I'm still in bed before I get up and read scripture. I need scripture and stillness before I write. I'm more consistent with exercise if it comes later in the day. ⁠ ⁠ What works for you?
