i created this one because fantasy used to be my top genre, but i kinda strayed the last couple of years and while i do love my contemporary romances and fucked up horror books, it's time to return to my roots :)
if you wanna join me as i rekindle my love for fantasy, here are the challenge rules:
🔮 REBLOG this post if you're participating!
🔮 join the challenge over on storygraph (optional)
🔮 for each of the prompts, read a book of your choice and cross the prompt out on the above template
🔮 post your updates in the form of text posts, bookish photos, or anything else you come up with under the tag #2023 fantasy reading challenge!
🔮 the challenge will last until the end of the year, but feel free to finish it at your own pace
[transcript and explanations of the prompts below the cut]
THE 9 PROMPTS IN THIS CHALLENGE ARE:
HIGH FANTASY
Set in a magical environment that has its own rules and physical laws, this subgenre’s plots and themes have a grand scale and typically center on a single, well-developed hero or a band of heroes, such as Frodo Baggins and his cohorts in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1954).
URBAN FANTASY
Urban fantasy is generally understood to be a low fantasy set in a real-world, modern, urban society (or something closely resembling one). The fantastical elements are usually not known to the general population.
i.e. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
FANTASY WITH A ROMANCE SUBPLOT
pretty self-explanatory :)
LONG-OVERDUE SERIES
Read the first book of a fantasy series you've had on your tbr for ages!
GRIMDARK FANTASY
A high fantasy with a gritty or grim setting, often focussing on characters with less-than-impeccable morals, anti-heroes, or on criminal underworlds within fantasy societies. This sub-genre provides a contrast to more traditional fantasy worlds and their moral heroes, quaint medieval villages and resplendent cities.
i.e. The Lies of Locke Lamora
YA FANTASY
also quite obvious, but just in case: A fantasy that is primarily aimed or marketed at a young adult (teenage) readership, usually with young adult protagonists.
i.e. Six of Crows
SCIENCE FANTASY
A blend of science fiction and fantasy, where advanced technology and the supernatural both come into play, or tropes from both genres are used. Often fantastical and impossible things occur under a thin guise of scientific credibility.
i.e. Senlin Ascends
OLD FAVOURITE
Reread an old favourite fantasy book.
CHILDREN'S FANTASY
If you want to join the challenge on storygraph too, check the notes for the link xx

Summer Reading Challenge 2.0 - time to diversify your reads by picking up a book by a queer author ☀︎
Iron Widow
by Xiran Jay Zhao
Pitched as Dragonball meets furry Pacific Rim, Iron Widow is a genius sci-fi book set in an anachronistic Chinese culture that follows Wu Zetian, whose only wish is to avenge her sister’s sacrifice in a patriarchal militaristic state.
This has: epic battles, a badass female protagonist, lgbtq+ characters, and a true love triangle (not a love corner).
(blurb by @upside-down-uni)
Honey Girl
by Morgan Rogers
What Grace went to Las Vegas for: Partying after she finally got her PhD in astronomy. What she didn’t go to Las Vegas for: getting married to a beautiful stranger that makes her question everything and turns her world upside down. Honey Girl is about getting married and falling in love afterwards, letting go of some things and finally taking other things in hand, loving your friends so much it hurts and late night podcasts about magic that are maybe less about magic than about humans.
This has: a main character and love interest of colour, found family, and the trials and tribulations of Adulting.

Pride Reading Challenge 🌈
i’m ¼ of the way through the challenge, so i thought i’d post an update. the prompts i’ve filled so far are:
• coming out book (a book where coming out is a (relatively) major plot point)
• epically queer (a larger than life story featuring queer epic heroes)
• yes homo (a queer romance book)
• not gay as in happy but queer as in fuck you (a book featuring characters with lesser known orientations/gender identities)
[ books i read for each of the prompts and my thoughts below the cut ]
🌈 coming out book: game changer by r. reid
i was originally gonna read the magic between by s. hoyt for this prompt, but as it happens, i’ve been stuck on 80% with that one for months (i rly do struggle with magical realism asdbhjq). so instead, i picked this up bc i wanted to read the sequel/companion novel, but a friend told me it’s worth reading this one too and yes. she was right. this was delightful and i found myself laughing out loud, the perfect read for during exam season.
🌈 epically queer: iron widow by x. j. zhao
mx zhao is insane for writing this. that’s all i’m gonna say. godspeed.
🌈 yes homo: people notice the rain by c. paul
this was a reread of the 1st book in a series that somehow, impossibly, made me enjoy a werewolf story - and even though this book isn’t as good as the sequels, it’s still a v enjoyable cute ya queer romance with some mystery. i’m just gonna copy/paste the blurb i wrote for this trilogy a couple months back: A beautiful, smoothly unravelling narrative meets truly atmospheric writing in this story of growth and trust, with the added sprinkle of the supernatural. Fresh and exciting, and most importantly, inclusive in a way that feels as effortless as breathing. Truly worth picking up, even if werewolf stories aren’t your cup of tea - this just might change your opinion (it did mine)(I still cannot believe it). Each book in the trilogy introduces more different identities, ending with, quite literally, a single token straight in the (found) family. Oh, there’s also d&d and gorgeous weather motifs that just tie the tale together perfectly.
🌈 not gay as in happy but queer as in fuck you: people need a storm by c. paul
the story continues in this sequel, which had me squealing of feels not even 80 pages in; it has the most pov from my fave character in the series and so much foreshadowing,,,,, rereading this series was such a great idea. i rly think the writing and pace and characters pick up in this one, lads
If you have any questions regarding the books i’ve read for the challenge so far or if you have any thoughts on them/the challenge, my asks are always open :D
