He’s conflicted so showing that he is sure about the choice he made might make him believe that he made the right decision. So he’s trying to convince himself and everyone else that he’s doing well.
His main goal is to repair his relationship with Chris. Being grim definitely wouldn’t be a positive sign for his son and there’s no way he isn’t a little excited about going to Texas. After all he hasn’t seen Christopher in a while so he might be staying more or less positive for him.
There’s a multitude of reasons why people behave the way they do. Even tho Eddie’s not a real person, treating him as one could make his actions easier to understand. If you think I’m reading too much into it or that he’s not that nuanced I don’t care
