Season One Sam & Dean - treasured moments...
Sam: Dean, are you still there? Dean: Yeah. Sam: What's happening? Dean: It's just staring at me. What do I do? Sam: Just what you are doing - bringing it to you. Dean: Wh-? Truck races towards Dean who’s sitting in the Impala. Dean: Come on, come on. Ghost truck breaks into pieces and disintegrates just before it reaches Dean who looks around, trying to see if it’s really over. Sam: You still there? Dean? Dean: Where'd it go? Sam: Dean, you're where the church was. Dean: What church? Sam: The place Cyrus burned down and murdered all those kids. Dean: There's not a whole lot left. Sam: Church ground is hallowed ground whether the church is still there or not. Evil spirits cross over hallowed ground, sometimes they're destroyed. So, I figured maybe that would get rid of it. Dean: Maybe? Maybe?! What if you were wrong?! Sam: Huh. - makes his thinking face - Honestly, that thought hadn't occurred to me. Dean pulls the cell phone away from his ear, gives it a dirty look, then hangs up. Dean (in a mocking voice): "Well, that honestly didn't occur to me." Dean lets his eyes close, and his head falls forward, before his hand hits the steering wheel and he takes a deep breath. Dean: I'm gonna kill him.
Route 666 may have had its issues, but it gave us this memorable exchange. Sam and Dean are separated, Dean is in imminent danger from the ghost truck while Sam is in relative safety a good distance away. Speaking to each other over the cell phone, that would never think of cutting out at such a critical moment. Dean drives exactly the seven-tenths of a mile and stops. He stares out his front windshield as the truck attempts to run him down. Curling in on himself as he waits for the potentially terrible fate to arrive. But he does wait. Because Sam told him to. His little brother, for whatever undisclosed reason, told Dean to stop and wait. And Dean does. He may be salty about it after, and Sam appears like this was an interesting experiment that thankfully had a good outcome, but it is so much more. It shows that deep down, no matter what, they trust one another. That when it counts, they are the ones that they can rely upon. While it was played for humor, it is a foundational stone upon which so much is built.
