“Well, if you feel that strongly about your truth, then there is no reason to worry about your existence, is there?”
― Ryka Aoki, Light from Uncommon Stars
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, 2021.
Yesterday at sapphic book club, we were discussing Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, and someone pointed out how well the story treats the immigrant experience. And that made me realize something I hadn’t thought about before: that maybe—this being a book with a trans protagonist—that’s not a coincidence. That being trans is, in a sense, an immigrant experience.
Like immigrants, we have to learn customs that were not taught to us as children, unless we were lucky enough to immigrate/begin our transitions very young. Like immigrants, we often feel, at least in the beginning, like we’re stumbling through this learning process while everyone else is judging us. Like immigrants, we sometimes wonder if natives will accept us as truly belonging, or if we’ll always be seen as outsiders. Like immigrants, we face the competing pressures of assimilation (the need to fully pass) vs. maintaining all aspects of our identities (being visibly trans). Like immigrants, we’re perceived as taking away resources from natives when in reality we’re adding to the wealth of culture, safety, and community. And like immigrants, there are certain features of our chosen homes/true genders that natives are completely bored and disillusioned with (“It’s not as great as you think it is,” they swear to us), but which we find so amazing and take so much pleasure and gratitude in, because we thought these experiences would always be outside of our reach.
It’s not a perfect metaphor, and I’m sure it can be taken it apart in a lot of ways, but to me it feels true and kind of beautiful.
