I was watching a show, you may have heard of, New Amsterdam. Season 5 was finally released on Netflix. This is how I find out that child marriage is legal in 44 US states.

Ima let that sink in for a sec. Child marriage is legal in fourty-four states in America.

Hold on.

Child marriage is legal in fourty four out of fifty states in the USA.

This statistic was when the show was made, in 2022.

This is not the 1600s. Nor 1800s. This is today. 21st century. How the fuck has it been this long to rectify? And even with the laws in place there’s room for exceptions? Tf?

As of June 2024, per Wikipedia, there are currently 37 states where child marriage is completely LEGAL.

How the absolute fuck am I only now finding out about this. Not to mention the trillion billion other things that’s fucked up in the US.

Why is this not on every news station in America? Not to mention all the other legal issues that aren’t protected. There’s not a law to protect gender equality, or in fact any equality. They overturned RVW. The president should be in jail, also. Can’t follow his own laws, and yet now he’s protected by them.

I’m not American but I am terrified for all the people out there in danger. For everyone vulnerable to these laws, and the future that might be created.

I can’t even begin to imagine how many children are affected by this right now but I’m more concerned why it’s kept so quiet. Why aren’t there protests? Riots? Why am I finding out about this through a tv show? And not the news? Internet? Anything?

I’m so disturbed right now. Please tell people. Nothing will change if no one is even aware of it.

Recognize the game: saying they want to ban all birth control might make completely banning abortion seem a tad bit less extreme, but the truth is both things are extreme, and make no mistake—conservatives DO want both things; they want forced birth and they want those born into poverty to be ignorant, desperate and compliant.

No affordable, nationalized healthcare.

Protests banned.

Militarized, widely unaccountable police forces.

Book bans.

Erasure of LGBTQ people in schools.

Revisionist history of racism and slavery in schools.

Abortion bans.

Contraception bans.

Forced births.

This is the Republican Party.

And never forget: they did not get here without some help along the way.

Look, I’m not here for all of that Red vs. Blue bullshit, okay? Imma people over party kinda brutha. The Republican Party is irredeemably, thoroughly and completely evil. Anyone with an iota of common sense and a hint of morality knows that, and if they don’t, you aren’t going to convince them to be good people with a sternly worded social media post. So that’s not my priority.

But conservative Democrats are not without blame. Idgaf if you naively believe they’ve “changed” or had an epiphany or something. All I know is, things would not be as bad as they are if leadership in the Democratic Party actually didn’t fucking help Republicans along the way.

I am so sorry for my American followers. Coming from a country that bans abortions (except for cases where the mother's life is directly threatened), I empathize with you. It is absolutely insane that they repealed RvW, taking away women's rights to bodily autonomy, regressing the country back decades.
