My hometown. Main Street. Foothills of the Blue Ridge. Felt like a thousand miles from anywhere. Still, not a bad place to be a kid. That gap in the mountains is Hickory Nut Gorge - Lake Lure and Chimney Rock and the road heading west to Asheville. The courthouse you can see on the right - still had the white and 'colored' water fountains when I was a little kid in the 60s. My mom took us with her to the laundromat, before she got her own machine, down that road behind the courthouse. We got to walk uptown, run inside the courthouse, nose around. I remember the marble steps going up to the courtrooms were bowed in the middle from use. Rolling Stone once wrote an article about the town in the 70s, one of those life in a "dying" town stories - made everyone mad, in a Thomas Wolfe kind of way. But that town has been there since the 1700s. I feel sure it will be there many years to come. Small, conservative in a mostly apolitical way, wholesome, stable...who knows what the future holds.
