Have you ever thought about befriending a plant that feels a little “rough” at first, yet is incredibly generous?

Among the first medicinal herbs to awaken in the Lemmen countryside, Ruta graveolens, commonly known as rue, is a Mediterranean perennial with small intense yellow flowers touched with green. They appear in early spring and bloom through summer, when, through fruiting, they transform into seed capsules.

Long regarded as a plant with occult powers, it has been used both in traditional medicine and in folk rituals, especially in distant places such as South America.

Rue is an apotropaic herb: it protects, wards off, purifies. When burned, it releases a pungent, sharp, unmistakable scent that is anything but accommodating.

Within this harshness lies both its strength and its nature. Rue contains alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, and essential oils that give it antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, digestive, and tonic properties. It is a plant that acts quickly, but for this very reason it requires moderation: in high doses it can be toxic, it is photosensitizing, and has traditionally been considered abortifacient.

It is not an “appealing” plant.

Its scent can easily repel, push away. And yet, over time, it changes: from unfamiliar to familiar, from piercing to pleasant and almost necessary. It is within this transition that rue reveals something deeper.

It protects without softening. It drives away not only evil, but also whatever clouds perception. It does not comfort: it clarifies. For this reason, it has long accompanied rituals of purification and rebalancing, not only of the body but also of one’s gaze.

You only need to brush against it, pause for a moment, breathe it in. Nothing more is required.

At Lemmen, among wind and stone, grow plants that do not seek to please. Beneath their discreet appearance they conceal messages that speak deeply to us, and perhaps this is why they speak so clearly.

Rue is an extraordinary plant. If we are willing to challenge ourselves and approach it beyond habit and familiarity, it introduces us to unexpected worlds and reconnects us with our own power. It is not a plant that offers itself freely; on the contrary, it firmly demands our attention. And for this very reason, once truly encountered, it is never forgotten.

Avete mai pensato di fare amicizia con una pianta un po’ “ruvida”, ma estremamente generosa?

Tra le prime erbe officinali a risvegliarsi nella campagna di Lemmen, la Ruta graveolens, comunemente chiamata ruda, è una perenne mediterranea dai piccoli fiori giallo intenso con una sfumatura verde, che compaiono a inizio primavera e sbocciano fino all’estate, quando attraverso l’allegagione si trasformano in capsule di semi.

Da sempre considerata una pianta dal potere occulto, è stata utilizzata tanto nella medicina tradizionale quanto nei rituali popolari, soprattutto in contesti lontani come il Sud America.

La ruta è un’erba apotropaica: protegge, allontana, purifica. Bruciata, sprigiona un odore pungente, netto, inconfondibile e tutt’altro che accomodante.

Dentro questa asprezza si concentrano il suo potere e la sua natura. La ruta contiene alcaloidi, cumarine, flavonoidi e oli essenziali che le conferiscono proprietà antibatteriche, antinfiammatorie, digestive e toniche. È una pianta che agisce prontamente ma proprio per questo richiede misura: a dosi elevate può risultare tossica, è fotosensibilizzante e tradizionalmente considerata abortiva.

Non è una pianta “accattivante”.

Il suo odore può facilmente respingere, allontanare. Eppure, con il tempo, cambia: da estraneo diventa familiare, da pungente a gradevole e quasi necessario. È in questo passaggio che la ruta rivela qualcosa di più profondo.

Protegge senza addolcire. Allontana non solo il male, ma anche ciò che offusca. Non consola: chiarisce. Per questo, da sempre, accompagna gesti di purificazione e riequilibrio, non solo del corpo ma anche dello sguardo.

Basta sfiorarla, fermarsi un istante, respirarla. Non serve altro.

A Lemmen, tra vento e pietra, crescono piante che non cercano di piacere. Sotto il loro aspetto discreto celano messaggi che ci riguardano nel profondo e forse è per questo che parlano così chiaramente.
