After the wash step, apply the original colors on the raised areas. This highlights the model and adds more depth to it. Then add details like eyes, teeth, nails and stitchings. 

Applying a layer of wash/ink brings out the details of the model. A second layer enhances the effect. From here on out it’s basically touching up the miniature until you’re satisfied.

Final step before the magic happens. Basically you could play with the miniature now. All the main colors are where they belong. But with only a couple of steps more this will look so much better.

Now the ork is fully clothed. I’ve kept the swords unpainted for a simple reason: Metallic paints ideally shouldn’t be painted using the same brushes as the tiny pigments tend to keep being lodged between the hairs of the brush even after washing them. Therefore try to apply all non metallic paints first before starting with the metallics. Or use a different set of brushes. (Which you won’t until you really start to get into the hobby ;) )

Even with just the skin color applied the model stands out a lot more than the plain unpainted one. As you can see I was not overly careful and touched some places where the skin color definitely doesn’t belong. But I’ll fix those mistakes when I get to those places.

Apply the spray primer in several thin layers. Take your time and don’t apply too much primer in one go as that will obstruct the details of the miniature.

I picked a Blutrausch grunt from Rum & Bones 2nd season (by CMON) as it is a relatively easy miniature to paint and still allows me to show all basic techniques. This shows the washed, unprimed miniatures.
