it’s difficult to speak to this sort of thing on a romantic level,  as i’m not certain that squalo’s ever actually been in a serious romantic relationship at any point in his life –  but generally speaking,  i don’t think that  ‘conditional’  relationships are a thing for him?  insofar as his actual relationships go,  i mean;  i don’t really think his  ‘work’  contacts and etc. count for this,  because they’re only really good insofar as the person is useful to him / insofar as they do not stand to impose a burden upon him.  actual relationships,  though –  the ones that mean something to him in whatever context,  be it familial,  platonic,  and even romantic ( if / when he gets there! )  – are a different story entirely.  and it’s got a lot to do with his personality and his own perception of the world / relationships / etc.

one of the core aspects of squalo’s character is that he is fiercely loyal to those that’ve proved themselves worthy,  and as such,  he follows / maintains relationships / etc with said person with no strings attached,  and no requirements to be met;  in other words,  the relationship’s unconditional.  when i think about this i think about his relationship with his boss / his relationship to his fellow varia officers,  to dino,  his closest friend,  and even,  on occasion,  the neighboring vongola famiglia.  it’s no secret that squalo’s snappy,  he’s angry,  he shouts / swears a lot.  a lot of the time,  any one of the aforementioned people or groups have given him grief or caused him extra trouble,  and he’s griped about it –  but i don’t think he’s ever once questioned his loyalties to them even in spite of the fact.  and that’s really important,  given everything squalo is,  and how he operates;  at least it is,  in my opinion??  if someone gets in well-enough with him and proves themselves,  they can falter either in deed or in word,  and he’ll still be there  /  still remain as-is.  sure,  he might be a little testy,  but he doesn’t up and go.  i think all the grief xanxus has put him through over the years is testament enough to the fact –  when it comes to people that are important to him,  squalo can be,  in this sense,  surprisingly patient.  even understanding?  even if his shouty words and his sword-swinging doesn’t say as much gldkghfdlghh. 

i don’t think squalo sees any point in operating by way of conditionality in any other way except when regarding himself.  it’s pretty clear he values himself based on his usefulness / strength / honor as a swordsman,  and when he betrays that image of himself by not living up to the expectations set for him ( by himself ),  he shuts down a little bit.  in other words,  he’s only worthy of his title / position / life if,  and only if,  he remains undefeated,  and so on.  this also goes hand-in-hand with the whole “he has no sense of self-preservation” thing but that’s another story in and of itself and i’M NOT GONNA GO THERE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THIS IS ALREADY A WHOLE LOT OF WORD VOMIT!!!

I never think of Innes when I take a look at the list of FE characters from my favorite games, but I think you’re right. I love the snarky ones, and Innes in particular is great because he’s directly related to my current muse.
