The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken is a Young Adult novel published in 2012. It is the first book in a four-book series. The story is set in a not so futuristic America. It follows the life of Ruby Daly and her struggles with Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration or IAAN, which kills off 90% of America's children leaving 10% with a range of colour-coded powers. Greens possess heightened intelligence, Blues have the power to move an object with their mind. Yellows have the ability to create and control electricity, Oranges have the power to read and control people's minds and finally, Reds can control and create fire. The Government are afraid of the surviving children, especially the Oranges and Reds, so they put them into camps. The first person point of view really shows the hardship Ruby has to go through and, in my opinion, makes you love her and other characters even more. The relationships created are amazing and well developed throughout the novel. The love story isn't the main focus of the book and isn't seen as a necessity for the main character. Also, the friendships created are brilliant and, thankfully, not too rushed even leaving room for some more developing the next book. However, with positive opinions also comes negative ones. For me, I guessed the plot twist before it came into play which did ruin the shock factor. Other than that the rest of the story was excellent. The Darkest Minds definitely gets put on my top 10 list and is a great way to start a series. I would recommend this book to those who like found families. It does have a dystopian image but that isn't the main focus. I would give this book a 4/5.
