TW: ANIMAL DEATH
i'm really heartbroken. today i had to put rozwell down.
long story short, i found a deep cut on his tail and i think that, during the time he was underground for several weeks (which is normal for his species), he cut himself on something (probably his hiding rock or some unfortunately tough fibers in the dirt) and got an infection. i don't doubt that the humidity in the soil and air probably agravated it further. his infection paralyzed him from the waist down wherein his hind legs and tail were entirely unresponsive to all stimuli. his breathing was extremely labored, he rejected all food, and he had moments of convulsing. the infection had spread this far all while he was underground, and so i was unable to catch it and save him in time (i only found out when i saw his head peaking out from under the dirt and dug him out).
i'm really shaken because the last time I saw him, he was totally healthy. he's got a little body, so i can see how the infection spread so quickly and thouroughly. still, it's really shocking suddenly seeing a pet go from normal and happy to infected and paralyzed.
i know it was an accident, but i wish i had caught this sooner... after talking to other salamander owners and seeking help, the decision was made to end his pain, as it looked like he was too far gone.
i euthanized him by spreading orajel on his tummy and forehead, which works as a painless anesthesia for amphibians. i'm NOT posting pictures of his infection or what he looked like during the past few days. rozwell was really important to me. he was my first ever pet that only i cared for. i love him and i miss him already, but i'm happy to have had him in my life 💔🐸
