The popular former two-term governor is entering a race for a seat to be vacated by retiring Thom Tillis.

North Carolina's top Democratic vote-getter, former Gov. Roy Cooper, will be entering the race for an open Senate seat from NC in the 2026 midterms.
Incumbent Republican Thom Tillis announced his retirement earlier this year after some high profile disagreements with MAGA.
Dems need to flip four seats to take control of the Senate. Roy Cooper's entry into the race makes that a bit easier.
Roy Cooper is expected to announce his campaign for the North Carolina Senate as soon as Monday, according to two people directly familiar with the former governor’s decision. The popular, former two-term governor’s entrance into the Senate race — for a seat Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is leaving open with his announcement last month that he won’t seek reelection — is likely to transform the Senate race into the most competitive of 2026. Democrats, facing a difficult path to seizing control of the Senate next year, landed their dream recruit with Cooper, who would enter the race as a favorite.

Scott and Gianforte are the cream of the crop. Cox is just barely daddy-ish for me. Although, he's anti-Trump which helps. Still, he doesn't hold a candle to his opponent, Brian King:
