Catching up with the photographer whose iconic images helped to define the birth of LA’s punk scene.
Great interview from 2022 with legendary L.A. scene punk photographer, Ed Colver. I met Colver briefly at the opening of a small show he had at the former Rough Trade store/venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 2017. They had a cool little gallery room upstairs from the shop.
The store was a bit overpriced and weak on used stuff, but decent, plus lots of cool books and some good author events. I met and quickly interviewed Sire Records founder, Seymour Stein, there. But the venue side was a great place to see a show.
Some of the shows I saw there: Royal Headache, Red Aunts, John Doe and Chrissie Hynde doing solo/chat gigs, Superchunk, and more. Sadly the whole placed closed a few years ago; and in a reversal of the usual NYC migration of the last 25+ years, Rough Trade opened a new space on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. The store's still too expensive and has a super odd used section, but they do some interesting surprise solo act events.
