I always think this song fits Jack Frost pretty well. After all, Jack is similar to Victoria as they have been deserted and tossed out, and they wander around the streets, looking where they are going to find a home. They desperately search for acceptance and love from others. They also have the desire to help others to feel wanted (Victoria towards Grizabella; Jack Frost towards Pitch).

“Follow me home if you dare to I wouldn't know where to lead you”

Jack could be imagining himself speaking to other mythical beings, spirits, children or the audience with this. Although his home is Burgess, he remains aimless and lonely because he does not know of his purpose and nobody can see him.

“Should I take chances when no one took chances on me?”

Jack is reluctant to join the Guardians because they never took chances on him. After all, the Guardians have always known about Jack but they never let him into their lives.

“So I watch from the dark, wait for my life to start With no beauty in my memory”

Jack has been alone in the world, aimlessly wondering as he tries to find his purpose. He has lost his memories and the memories as a winter spirit are mainly pain and loneliness.

“All that I wanted was to be wanted Too young to wander London streets, alone and haunted Born into nothing At least you have something, something to cling to Visions of dazzling rooms I'll never get let into And the memories were lost long ago But at least you have beautiful ghosts”

Jack’s utmost desire is to be wanted. He has been wondering the streets (since he travels around the world, he would have been to London) by himself since he has risen from the pond by the Man in the Moon. Plus, he is a very young spirit (300 years old). Moreover, Jack is born into nothing as he states that the only thing that the Man in the Moon ever told him was his name: Jack Frost. He has no family, no friends and nobody can see him. Besides, when Tooth tells Jack that she has his tooth box that contains his memories before he becomes Jack Frost, Jack says that he was no one before he became Jack Frost. Furthermore, Jack envies the Guardians who have believers and each other. The lyrics “Visions of dazzling rooms I’ll never get let into” refers to Jack’s failed attempts to sneak into the North Pole as he never gets past the Yetis (after all, Jack is never invited to the North Pole until he is kidnapped by the Yetis because he’s chosen as a Guardian. The lyrics “memories were lost long ago” could refer to Jack’s memories before he was Jack Frost, or the Guardians’ memories of their previous lives since Tooth says that they were all someone before they were chosen. The lyrics “beautiful ghosts” could refer to the people like family and friends in the Guardians’ past lives, or the children who believe in them as they become part of the Guardians’ memories even though they have grown old and/or passed away.

“Perilous night, their voices calling A flicker of light before the dawning Out here, the wild ones are taming the fear within me”

Jack Frost’s mural depicts him fighting wolves in the forest, which could fit the lyrics “Perilous night, their voices calling”, while “A flicker of light before the dawning” could refer to Sandy’s dreamsand since Jack knows him and likes to play with his dreamsand. “The wild ones” could mean animals or children, but most likely children since Jack loves to bring fun and joy to them even though they can’t see him (hence, it probably tames Jack’s fear within him).

“Scared to call them my friends and be broken again Is this hope just a mystical dream?”

Jack is unwilling to make himself vulnerable to the Guardians except Sandy. After 300 years of isolation, being abandoned, ignored and rejected (do refer to the analysis link above), Jack is reluctant to accept his role as a Guardian. He is afraid to accept the Guardians as his friends as he fears that the Guardians would reject him and he would get hurt once more. Pitch also taunts Jack about that fear, hence, the lyrics “Is this hope just a mystical dream?” reflects Jack’s fear.

“And so maybe my home isn't what I had known What I thought it would be But I feel so alive with these phantoms of night And I know that this life isn't safe, but it's wild and it's free”

These lyrics can be interpreted two ways: One, since Jack lost his memories of his past life, he has no idea about Burgess and his residents, and due to human activity, Burgess is constantly changing, unlike the Guardians’ residences. Although Jack is alone in the world and it is certainly not safe, at least it is a wild and free life for him. Two, Jack never thought that his home would be with the Guardians since Jack didn’t think that he’s Guardian material (“What makes you think I wanna be a Guardian?” and “You are all hard work and deadlines, and I am snowballs and fun times. I’m not a Guardian.”). The life as a Guardian is not safe since you have to protect the children from Pitch and his Nightmares, but it is wild and free since you can have action-packed adventures with the Guardians and you don’t have to be alone anymore.

Pitch, Pitch, Pitch.

The majority of my thousands of posts on Tumblr have involved Pitch Black in some way, shape or form, so it’s no wonder that I can wax on rhapsodically about the villain of RISE OF THE GUARDIANS.

Over the course of a 97-minute movie, his physical gestures become more and more theatrical and grandiose, his voice more dramatic and ringing.

But let’s go back to the earliest scenes with Pitch.

His very first line is meant solely for the ears of one little girl. “Oh, I *thought* I heard the clippety-clop of a unicorn.”

Then he has a brief one-on-one with the Man-in-the-Moon. Again, quietly matter-of-fact, with some smugness, but rather subdued compared to other villains straight out of the box.

Finally you get his first confrontation with the Guardians and Jack. A bit more gloating in his voice, but still quite understated despite the sarcastic tone as he proclaims himself “a little star-struck”. And the way he leans so languidly in the mullioned struts of the Tooth Palace, chin cupped in his hand and elbow on the sill, as he addresses Jack Frost as a “neutral party” and then thrusts unerringly with the pointed-yet-oh-so-softly-spoken line “so I’m going to ignore, you. But I’m sure you’re used to that.”

All of Pitch’s earliest scenes remind me of what stage magicians do in close-up tricks. He makes you come to *HIM*, and mesmerizes you with a tight focus.

But we find soon enough that there’s energy and flamboyance, not to mention anger and rage, thrumming not terribly far under that sleek, lithe exterior. And thus Pitch pushes his stage to become bigger and bigger in each encounter as he exerts control, until you get the huge Nightmaresand / frozen lightning ice sculpture in Antarctica, and Pitch flailing his arms about as he extols a world where everything, EVERYTHING can be…

Bravo, Maestro.

This ending song from Kingdom Hearts 3 gives me a lot of feels for Jack Frost / Nightlight x Katherine from the Guardians of Childhood book series by William Joyce. I am not well verse of the books because I can’t find the books in my area (I only had ever read the books about the Man in the Moon and the Sandman). I did read up the plots from the wiki even though it’s incomplete. At least I have some grasp about it.

I try to focus primarily on Rise of the Guardians because since book 5 “Jack Frost: The End Becomes the Beginning”, the book universe and the movie universe have become separated. However, I do share fanarts for the Guardians of Childhood.

This song by Utada Hikaru highlights the relationship between Sora and Kairi. They start as friends and by the end of Kingdom Hearts 3, they have seemingly become more than friends as they share a Paopu Fruit, which has this legend: "If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They'll remain a part of each other's lives no matter what." In the Guardians of Childhood series, Nightlight (later becomes Jack Frost) and Katherine start out as friends and then they become lovers. Fortunately, their relationship end with a happy ending, unlike Sora and Kairi.

I’ve been reviewing RISE OF THE GUARDIANS screencaps from this handy site, and I just stumbled upon quite a mystery, one that I intend to incorporate into CITIZEN.

We all know that Sandy returns, wags his finger at Pitch, and knocks him into next week.  When Pitch lands, he’s conked out and dreaming of butterflies.

We see the dreamsand stream of butterflies spread out through the whole neighborhood, including past the Bennett house.

Sophie’s supposed to be asleep in one of the upstairs bedrooms, but of course she’s awake and gets to see the magic happening.

Meanwhile, Jamie starts a snowball fight against the other Burgess kids.

And out of nowhere, Sophie is suddenly there and taking part.

How the HECK does a three-and-a-half year-old get out of a house that’s locked up for the night?  I can see Jamie at ten having some ingenuity in sneaking out, but his baby sister?

However, this also means that she’s present to see her brother walk through Pitch, and present to see Pitch’s reaction to it.  Whether her young mind can process that information, though, remains to be seen.  

Sophie’s reaction to Pitch’s downfall is story fodder for another day.  

In the meantime, I’m just going to headcanon young Sophie as a budding escapologist and safecracker, in addition to the artistic drawing, fashion design, and painting skills that so many ascribe to her.  

That fits in nicely with her being fond of DOCTOR WHO companion Jo Grant when Sophie gets older. 

I never noticed before that you do not see Sandy’s reaction to Pitch being dragged away by the Nightmares.  All of them watch him being CHASED by the Nightmares, but when it comes to that last appeal on the part of the defeated enemy, the Sandman is nowhere to be seen.  

Because I was bored on the plane the other day and this tiny fandom needs more people breaking down every second of this movie.  I’m gonna start with a few Jack and Pitch scenes because they’re my favorites.

Jack attempts to leave Pitch and his offer behind.  Pitch is still holding his hands up from his earlier enthusiasm at the thought of teaming up with Jack, of having someone to trust and to have his back.  He lowers his hand, watching Jack walk away, and finally, you can see him taking it in, trying to erase the fantastical idea of companionship from his mind.  He's mourning the loss of what they might've have been between them.

"Now for the last time, leave me alone."   Pitch has been frustratedly rejected by Jack, and even after this, his entire body is leaning in toward him, as though his form refuses to accept it and instead still feels that magnetic pull to the one who *should* understand him.  -Wait, I'm not done yet, we're not-  

I think most of us know this look all too well.  The moment of devastation, just wishing that it hadn't been true, that Jack actually did want to be with him, on his side.   Because he thought they were the same.  He thought Jack understood the pain of being alone, and perhaps this is the moment he realizes that Jack already found people to care about him, and so he wasn't needed or wanted.  The discovery that even to Jack, he was going to be invisible and hated, because the one thing he could potentially offer him- a family, a friend, a lover, a person to understand and to care- his position has already been taken by the Guardians.  He has no place, once again left in the dark to be alone, which I think is why he later in this scene tells Jack "You said wanted to be left alone.  So *be* alone."   His resentment for his own loneliness is showing itself in that quote.

See how now that Jack has rejected him and he's accepted it, he's leaning back as he presents Baby Tooth to Jack?  That expression on his face just so much says to me that he feels like Jack is making him do this, he resents it.   He wanted Jack to join him, he didn't want to have to pull a threat, but there they were, and it had to be done.

Pitch has just been chased by the Guardians onto the frozen pond, and Jack watches(I think he looks a lot like when he was pleading with the moon, which translates as being very upset in my book) as North states that it's Pitch who is truly the one who holds the most fear.  Look at him, see how much it hurts to see someone you relate to, someone who could have been your friend or even much more than that, being so entirely afraid, so beaten down, scared, lost?  It isn't easy.  Sandy and the others feel this is righteous, but Jack only feels his chest twist that this is wrong.  Only for a few moments.  He then convinces himself, no, *reminds* himself that Pitch isn't in the right, he does deserve this.

What are they doing there, at that pond, chasing Pitch down?  Why do that, when the man has already been hit physically and then taken the emotional blow of being run through?  Why do this now, wasn't it just cruel? He's alarmed by what’s going on.

At least for this moment, nothing about this situation is sitting right with him.
