This wonderful rose is from a grafting I took from the original, quite cuffed by that! My self grafted Shropshire Lad rose (quite a success) from the original... bought to honour our son Doug who was born there. The Shropshire Lad rose is a stunning English Climbing Rose bred by David Austin in 1996. It features large, perfectly formed, slightly cupped, light peach-pink rosettes with a lovely fruity tea fragrance. This vigorous climber boasts plentiful large, dark green leaves and can reach up to 10 feet (3 meters) in height. Originally bred as a shrub rose, it was developed from a cross between 'Heritage' and an unnamed seedling. The rose was named in honor of A.E. Housman’s poetry collection, A Shropshire Lad, marking the 100th anniversary of its publication. It’s a repeat bloomer, flowering from late spring until frost, and remains attractive throughout the season. Notably, it is almost thornless, making it a great choice for gardeners who prefer a smoother climbing rose. It thrives in full sunlight and is suitable for walls, fences, doorways, obelisks, or pillars. Unfortunately, David Austin Roses has retired this variety, meaning it is no longer part of their English Rose Collection.
