Aster is, naturally, an owl. Carol (her owl) is an extension of herself. I donât have too much justification for this other than: itâs cool and was conceptualized as a play on the lyric âOwls on the night watchâ from the Murders cover. Also a Labyrinth (1986) reference. She is The Observerâ˘ď¸
I have a few answers for Hyacinth. Iâd like to say sheâs a cat, probably some kind of lion (to tie in the sun symbolism since lions are often associated with the sun, and also because of the way she kind of thrusts herself into a leadership role). But Iâd also like to say peacock? Maybe even more so than lion. Physically it reminds me of Hyacinth a lot, especially the colors, and the eyespots on the male peacockâs feathers remind of me the nazar amulet she has, along with them also having a little crown thing with the feathers lol. The association with royalty also ties into the leadership thing.
Amaranth would probably be some kind of bat or goat. Itâs touched upon in the lore bible I think, but the reason why Amaranth has wings and horns is because they started growing due to her own self-resentment. Because of her perception of herself as horrible and evil, she (painfully) manifested traits akin to a demon. As such, she would definitely be some kind of animal that has a stigma around it for being some kind of symbol of âevilâ with goats being associated with the devil and sin in biblical parables, and bats association with darkness, evil and vampirism in the case of vampire bats.
Rose is definitely some kind of dog, probably a mutt. Itâs both a reflection of her upbringing and her behaviors. In a lot of artwork Iâve seen about abuse and abuse survivors, itâs common to see the victim portrayed as a dog, either in the âhelpless puppyâ kind of way in depositions of child abuse or the âI donât know why I biteâ kind of way when itâs talking about the learned outbursts and behaviors that stem from abuse + the struggle to let anyone get close while *wanting* to get close to people (think also the phrase âlove like a dogâ and the way dogs are typically eager to please). I think it just fits all the tickets for her. Sheâs specifically a mutt because she feels no coherent sense of identity and also feels undesirable. (Since purebreds are typically preferred over mutts)
Following this, Rosemary would also be a dog, though I see her being a breed of toy dog, probably a King Charles Spaniel. Toy dogs are bred for companionship and often act as some kind of accessory due to their small size, which would symbolize Rosemaryâs lack of agency while they were still bodily a child. She was treated as an accessory to the adults in her life. Though she also still âloves like a dogâ and, as most abused children do, still fawns over the people who hurt her. Poor kid :(
