British book designer and type historian Alan Bartram’s very useful 2007 reference book Typeforms  a history, published in London by The British Library and in New Castle, Delaware by Oak Knoll Press, is a follow-up and companion piece to Bartram’s notable 1968 publication An Atlas of Typeforms, which he wrote with lettering designer James Sutton. In Typeforms  a history, Bartram takes the nearly 75 different types displayed in Atlas and places them in their historical context. Each typeface is sequentially presented on its own page, but toward the end, when Bartram comes to “Decorated” typeforms, he plows them together on four pages in a random selection of decorative types. 

At first disconcerting after the plodding, ordered presentations of the previous pages, it nevertheless offers a riotous display of decorative types, like a United Nations of ornamental types all speaking in different languages at the same time, that while overwhelming, is also exhilarating. We present these pages for your own consideration which offers types ranging from about 1700 (Union Pearl) and 1759 (Rosart) through Victorian styles to the 20th century, such as Bifur, designed by the French poster artist A. M. Cassandre in 1929, all three of which are highlighted here.
