BOOK Exquisite Gunpowder City 16 Shot, 2008 in collaboration with Roosje Klap

The book focuses on the kaleidoscopic translation of the general concept of ‘Exquisite Gunpowder City 16 Shot'.

The book holds two especially designed pop-ups: explosions in paper. Furthermore, a series of photos of the Xiamenese site-related outside event ‘Blowing up in Public’ is featured - as well as drawings and other photographs. 

Klap and De Groot have asked four internationally acclaimed writers to participate and contribute for this book: fiction-writer Nina Thibo (NL), war correspondent Joeri Boom (NL, chief editor for ‘De Groene Amsterdammer’ and 'NRC Handelsblad'), curator Huib Haye van der Werf (USA/NL) and artist Florian Wüst (D).

Amsterdam based artist initiative De Service Garage showed 1.500m2 
solo installation of artist Kaleb de Groot and designer Roosje Klap.

Revisit Exquisit is the closing exhibition of De Service Garage at the current location. De Groot and Klap took this as the starting point
to rigorously cut open part of the roof to let the daylight inside the exhibition area, a reference to the cities' recently demolished, 
hated and loved 'New Wing' of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Revisit Exquisit are inflatables, fireworks, wood, concrete scupltures and silkscreens. The constructions, wood sculptures and reused artworks form the cyclic process towards an abstract dynamic installation. By integrating architectonical elements, such as the yellow presentation bases, De Groot and Klap question essential questions about the presentation of art itself.

At the finissage, de Groot made a white suit performance 
with fireworks and paper pulp throughout the exhibition.

Artists Kaleb de Groot and designer Roosje Klap 
lived and worked in China during a residency 
at the Chinese European Art Centre (CEAC) 
for four months in 2008.


The project 'Exquisite gunpowder City 16 Shot' focused on implosion and explosion, producing broadband ways to freeze-frame explosions in the most physical of forms. This resulted in interventions in the public space, the presentation of an artist-book and a site-specific installation at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen.

They were both struck by the rigurous ways of the cities’ new floor plan, demolishing beautiful authentic city along its’ hungry way. 
Klap and De Groot researched ways to make fast-growing mixtures and inflatables that literally blow up or down in size, resulting in spatial studies. 

The title 'Exquisite Gunpowder 16 City Shot' refers to the fantastic names of fireworks and its’ awkward Chinese translations, as well as the 
amount of weeks they have stayed in China. The artist book focused on the kaleidoscopic translation of the general concept of ‘EGC16S’. 
The book holds two especially designed pop-ups: explosions in paper. Furthermore, photoseries of their Xiamenese site-related outside event 
‘Blowing up in Public’ is featured as well as drawings and other photographs.
