● Driver isn't technically the "pilot" of Mary. He HATES anything non-terrestrial (he needs his 4 wheels and horse power, can you really blame him?) but once Rocky comes aboard Mary he settles into the label of pilot a little better.
● Rocky will sometimes catch Driver reading manuals on the inner workings of the ship and, on one memorable occasion, tinkering on a spare (astrophage-less) spin drive left aboard for redundancy. Rocky asks Driver about it because, "You engineer, question? Pilot engineer, question? Amaze." Driver has to explain no, he's more like a mechanic, nothing like what Rocky is capable of. Rocky immediately offers to mentor Driver. On the way to Time Go Fishing, Rocky uses the chain-making opportunity to teach Driver how xenonite works and Driver tells him about human automobiles.
● There are days that are harder than others for Driver to feel fully human. He made peace with himself a long time ago, but he's never felt more alien than in space. It's hard for Driver to think of Earth or explain human customs to Rocky because he himself just never understood any of it. Sure, he's wanted, he's wanted so badly. He wanted to belong, to love and have a family and a community he can call his own. But he's been so far removed from a normal person's human experience that he can never say with certainty that any of it even mattered anyway. Rocky can always sense when Driver gets that way, and he's more silent in his support. He never tells Driver he's wrong for those feelings, as Rocky has felt the same since he found out about relativity and time dilation. What if Erid is completely different when he gets back? Can he even honestly say he'd know how to properly interact with other Eridians anymore? They both find comfort in each other, in those moments.
