Interview with the Legendary Singer & Songwriter Kevin Steele

Angel - Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your style?

Kevin - T. Rex, Mott The Hoople, The New York Dolls and the Rolling Stones were big ones. I was heavily into 70s glam rock. Still am. It influenced my look as well as my music. I loved the mysticism of Marc Bolan's lyrics, Ian Hunter's wit, David Johanson's street poetry and the strut and swagger of Mick and Keith.

Angel - What’s something you listen to that might surprise people, given the music you make?

Kevin - I love old school and outlaw country music. Not the stuff they sing these days which is basically pop music with an accent; I also love old-school R&B music. The bridge between the blues and rock 'n' roll.So you might hear some Hank Williams or some Wilson Pickett between the Stones and the Faces at my house.

Angel - What’s a non-musical skill, hobby, or obsession in the band thathas secretly shaped your music?

Kevin - I love to read and I'm sure that has greatly influenced my song writing. I don't have much time for hobbies and unfortunately my obsessions aren't necessarily healthy ones. I think my music has been much more shaped by my life experiences than anything else. I had a very difficult childhood. I lost my mother to violence at an early age, that trauma and my attempts to escape it through music are what initially motivated me. That and the hope that I could provide that same escape for someone else going through a difficult time that music gave me.

Angel - What is the biggest change in the music industry (Good and/or Bad )over the past 40 years?

Kevin - I could talk about this subject for hours. It's a completely different animal from when I started. People don't buy albums or CDs much anymore. You really have to stay on the road to make a living and I'm afraid that the more technology advances the less talent has to do with anything. Most record labels are just corporations pushing product and too many bands, in an attempt to be successful, become homogenized and lack any kind of diversity in their songwriting. Rock'n' roll should have elements of rebelliousness, humor and even a little danger, which seems to be lacking in a lot of today's young bands. These things aren't encouraged by an industry that for the most part cares about nothing but profit. The way people view live music has also changed drastically. Please put down your phones and live in the moment. There is an exchange of energy between the artist and the audience that suffers greatly from shows with assigned seating. Maybe I'm just jaded or being nostalgic but for me all of today's media overload kills a lot of the mystique that bands once had.

Kevin - You know I hadn't even planned on making another album so we're taking this one step at a time. We're comin' back to Bayboro Brewing! The Kevin Steele Band featuring guitarists Billy Summer and Matt Boyle, bassist Jim Stevens, drummer Steven C Tanner, and pianist Lee Pons. Friday, August 28 • 8 PM w/ very special guests St.Pete Sons. We’ll be doin' songs from my new solo record, One Thing Left To Do, along with some favorites from Roxx Gang and The Mojo Gurus.We're also looking into some festivals right now so you'll just have to stay tuned to my socials for any upcomingshows.

Angel - What are your favorite venue(s) to play shows at?

Kevin - Makes no difference. From clubs to theaters to auditoriums, it's theaudience that makes the show not the venue.

Kevin - Well, I don't drink coffee so that's a hard one to answer but I'm guessing an Irish Coffee or an Espresso Martini.
