Located below historic Meadow Brook Hall is Alfred's Games Room. As was customary of the time, men and women retired to different areas of the home after dinner. In this case, while Matilda and the other female guest retired to the living room, her husband (the room's namesake) and the gentlemen would retreat to this room, where they could play cards, billiards, etc. The room is fashioned after an English pub with custom woodwork that reflects the theme, including a chess piece frieze above the paneling, pool cues and balls, checkerboard, dice, dominoes, cribbage and cards. The doors even feature custom hinges decorated with suits of cards. Visited Meadow Brook Hall on Tuesday. Although I have taken the tour before, this is the first time that I was able to get photos that I personally feel are suitable for posting for your viewing pleasure. For those of you unaware, Meadow Brook is a sprawling estate located in the Detroit suburb of Rochester. The main house, an incredible Tudor Revival mansion, was built for Matilda Dodge Wilson (widow of John Dodge) and second husband, Alfred G. Wilson, a successful lumber executive. The architect was William E. Kapp, of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. It is also one of the largest homes in the United States. Meadow Brook Hall is widely referred to as one of America's Castles. Finally got to tour the historic and overall magnanimous Meadow Brook Hall. Meadow Brook Hall was designed by William E. Kapp of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls and built by Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of automobile pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband Alfred G. Wilson from 1926 to 1929. It is the 6th largest home in the United States and is possibly the country's preeminent example of Tudor Revial architecture. The home was named a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
