I wonder how many crises could’ve potentially been averted (or at least lessened) had the characters either been better liars or just completely unbothered/dismissive of any claims that could possibly harm them.
Imagine if Anne had simply acted like the notion of Aramis being her lover and father of her child was ridiculous.
Rochefort: “Another man wears the crucifix I gave you around his neck.”
Anne [bored]: “And? I gave it to him as a thank you gift for saving my life. Have you seen the kind of trouble he gets into? He needs all the luck he can get.”
Rochefort: "We have reason to believe the dauphin is actually the son of Aramis, not the king."
Anne [silently thanking her lucky stars that the child favored her genetics]: "Look at my husband and me, and look at Aramis. Does that child truly look like he could be Aramis's child? He has every dominant gene in the book. Look at this child compared to him. We'd have an expert explain it to you if you hadn't killed our physician."
Rochefort: "Were you aware that your governess was sleeping with him?"
Anne [bored]: "No, I don't particularly care to make my musketeers' private lives or body counts my business, Rochefort. You seem particularly interested in them, though. I wonder why that is."
Rochefort [visibly triggered]: “I’ve seen the way you look at Aramis! The way he looks at you!”
Anne [still bored]: “Have you looked at him? And I am his queen, after all. We should all appreciate his observant nature and dedication to the crown.”
