Sept/October 2017 Robert is so so fucked up it’s hilarious. The man is about to become a father and proceeds to:
drug Lawrence to get control of home farm, almost accidentally killing Liv
creates a fake company to invest in home farm with said company being an anagram of his name
pretends to sleep with Lawrence
fakes falling in love with Lawrence
sets up chrissie nearly getting hit by a car so he can rescue her
fakes murdering someone

A lot of people will say this is Robert without Aaron to ‘be better’ for and yeah, true. Yeah this is heartbroken Robert and his weird distraction coping mechanisms for his genuine earnest aching heartbreak. This is Robert reverting to type. Robert accepting he is now eternally tied to the whites and therefore to the worst version of himself. Reverting to all he feels he has left, home farm and regaining control of the Whites. But I think more pressingly this is Robert saying i tried to be good, I tried so so hard to be good…yet I still fucked up. I lost everything I cared about and I still ended up being the villain. And I proved everyone right about me. Being good is a mugs game. Might as well give up eh…
think I saw someone say 2016/17 are years of real reckoning for Robert. An inevitable extended analysis of the core question Can this man change? And we see the question asked over and over again from multiple characters perspectives.
The question that’s present through 2016 redemption and truly sincerely openly loving Aaron and then Aaron’s paranoia and the Rebecca saga, the schemes, the lying, but also the confessing, the honesty. Can Robert really change? it culminating in the ONS and the consequences of that and the Robert desperately trying to erase his mistake and go back to being better (ironically by treating Rebecca like a piece of dirt and being worse) and it results in the breakup and the above unhinged behaviour and Seb’s birth and Christmas eps and the further reckoning and redemption…
And the answer to the question is somehow both yes and no.

seeing robron fall in love for the 3748th time still hits the same way it did for the first time 8 years ago apparently
