Fantastic noir. Spends the first half setting up its characters before it rolls into the tense heist. Harry Belafonte is great as Johnny, making him sympathetic but also showing his general dickish nature towards women. Earle contrasts with his love for his girlfriend, but he’s a racist afraid of aging. When the two are forced together into a heist destined to fall apart, their anger towards each other becomes literally explosive. The finale makes the metaphor of the state of race politics in America extremely apparent, with a final punchline brilliantly delivered.
