So I looked into it and the only S8 writers who didn’t write post-purgatory Benny scenes were Thompson, Glass, and Dabb. I don’t think it’s Thompson because of Charlie’s line “Did you break up with someone too?” from LARP and the real girl, like he understands this is a real relationship that Dean cares about. It could be Glass, but all I know about him is he was in an earlier episode of the podcast (to discuss his unfortunate dog episode) and seems pretty chill and humble. Also this was only his second season with the show. But Dabb/Loflin wrote an episode with a Benny flashback and then split up! And then Loflin writes Citizen Fang?! Is this what their fight was about?

Sorry this post would be better suited for my own blog if I had an active one. I just wanted to maybe get some other eyes on/opinions on my theory.

Ho ho ho! *Rubs hands together* I love the idea of an SPN writer telling on themselves that they never bothered to actually watch the fucking source material and learn that Dean risking his life to defend a vampire happens by fucking 2x03.

Okay so. I'm gonna try to do this carefully by process of elimination through all the season 8 writers.

Jeremy Carver - (8x01, 8x23) Easily eliminated from the running because he was the one doing the running. He was showrunner.

Ben Edlund - (8x05 Blood Brother, 8x13 Everybody Hates Hitler, 8x21 The Great Escapist) Another easy elimination based on "Blood Brother".

Bucklemming - (8x03 Heartache, 8x07 A Little Slice of Kevin, 8x15, 8x19 Taxi Driver) Ross-Lemming is Singer's wife, so he probably wouldn't just talk shit about her/her writing partner. Plus 8x19 contains Dean and Benny's emotional goodbye with Dean promising to bring Benny back, and telling Sam he buried Benny instead of burning his bones in the hopes he would come back someday. This attitude from Dean is fundamentally at odds with the position of the writer described.

Adam Glass - (8x06 Southern Comfort, 8x12 As Time Goes By, 8x18 Freaks and Geeks) 8x06 opens with Sam and Dean arguing about Benny, and Dean pointing out that they just let Kate the werewolf go with zero issues. 8x18 seems to eliminate Glass from the running completely, given Dean defends innocent vampires again in this episode.

Robbie Thompson - (8x04 Bitten, 8x11 LARP and the Real Girl, 8x17 Goodbye Stranger, 8x20 Pac Man Fever). I agree with you about the breakup line about Benny from 8x11. Additionally, in 8x04, Sam and Dean let Kate the Werewolf go and they're both in agreement on it from the beginning. Sam actually provides all the caveats to letting her go. Dean is barely paying attention, focused on Kate and her friends claiming he says "awesome" too much. Zero worries about Kate.

Jenny Klein - (8x10 Torn and Frayed) I debated on this one a little more, but ultimately, I doubt it was Klein for two reasons. First, because she only contributed 1 episode to season 8, and it was her fourth credit in the whole series (1 episode writer credit each for season 5, 6, and 7. I doubt she would dig her heels in in the writer's room (if she was even there for this) against Carver and Singer. Second, there is also another fight between Sam and Dean over Benny at the beginning of her episode, 8x10, which splits them up when Dean refuses to agree to cut ties with Benny after Sam issues an ultimatum. So despite Sam getting to pretend he's been so horribly wronged and that he did nothing wrong (which in itself just ends up reflecting poorly on him since he won't hear Dean out about Martin), I don't think it was Klein.

This leaves, as predicted, Dabb and Loflin by process of elimination.

Andrew Dabb - (8x02 w/Loflin, 8x08 Hunteri Heroici, 8x14 Trial and Error, 8x22 Clip Show)

Daniel Loflin - (8x02 w/Dabb, 8x09 Citizen Fang, 8x16 Remember The Titans)

Dabb and Loflin are also particualrly good candidates. In fact. I am 100% sure based on the story that this is about Dabb.

First, unlike Klein, Dabblin would be comfortable throwing their weight around, because they were credited as producers by this point.

Second, prior to season 8, one of their episodes was the infamous "7x03 The Girl Next Door". Maybe one of them felt they had constructed some sort of seminal work there (lmaooo) and felt that Benny's existence was somehow "undoing" that.

Third, and most importantly, Citizen Fang would have been an important episode for the season, because it temporarily splits the brothers up. The writers room would have wanted to assign this episode as soon as possible and had it being worked on. If Dabb and Loflin were assigned this episode or if, Loflin really wanted this episode and Dabb really really didn't because he fundamentally disagreed with the idea that Dean would protect a vampire and that that would put him at odds with Sam, then that would finally explain Dabblin's sudden split after four seasons of co-authorship, and Singer's particular wording "you don’t want to write it, fine, write something else".

The idea of Benny causing them to split as a writing team because Dabb refused to be party to Citizen Fang is fascinating.

This is how I will be responding to asks, unfortunately. However, we will persevere! I believe I have seen up to season five ish? give or take, it's been a while. but here I go! The premise we are going to go with is that they met you on a hunt/ you were caught up in one of the many Winchester adventures, and somehow end up travelling/staying with them Cw: Gn reader, kind of verges on imagines instead of hc's but IM TRYING MY BEST! Set in earlier seasons. Possible spoilers if you're just starting it. Not proofread. Has a bit of plot to it. Age gap (sorry kinda)

Dean Winchester:

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 You had met Sam first, although he had used the name of a detective john stone, and he has asked you some questions. You looked like you'd have something to say about the case; farmlands drying up, cattle dying, and all other anomalies in your town. The weird stuff, ya know?

Which is how you ended up hiding with the brothers in a graveyard in the middle of the wood.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Obviously, Dean hit on you as soon as he saw you, your look just caught his eye and he couldn't help it! Even if he was in the middle of saving you.

The wrath of a disturbed forest spirit tormented him, he's covered in dirt, blood, and is entirely wrecked, and he looks to you and says something stupid like "Hey good lookin', come here often?" with a dumb smirk before a tree barrels past him.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 After that hunt ended, Dean had asked you how you knew so much. You admitted that you tended to have a "feeling" about these things.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He was wary when you and Sam started bonding over this whole psychic thing. In the end, you grow on him and he likes you "hoodoo voodoo crap" as he so kindly puts it.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He sticks around you, lays on the bed while you read up on something and just watches you.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Dean treats everything very casually, even though it's plain to see how your eyes bore into him. it'd take him a long time, and probably a near death experience for him to sit down and talk about his feelings with you.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Speaking of those eyes. They unsettled him. Every time he looked over, he saw your eyes already locked on. They were dark and lacked the glimmer that most had. at first, he found it creepy, but overtime your swirling, haunting gaze grew on him, and he was nervous for a different reason

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Despite how casual he keeps things; he makes sure you never draw the short end of the stick. someone has to climb down a suspicious well? Sam. Need psychic bait? Also Sam. (sorry Sammy)

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Dean preferred to show his affection for you through Quality Time, and Acts of Service. He goes out of his way to get you your favorite snack or fix something of yours that broke. He'll always bring it to your attention too. Not just because he's smug, but because he loves when you show appreciation. (Cough - daddy issues - cough)

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 One day, you had hung up a beaded rosary on his rearview mirror, and he never touched it. When he sits alone in the car, he stares at it, like it's taunting him. But something makes him keep it.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He'd ask you to go for a drive, just so he can slowly roll down backroads with old churches and barns. In fact, every new town the group passes through, he'll survey as much as possible and take not of any weird things he thinks you'd like.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He'd speak softly and park the car just to focus on you. Most likely, he'd ruin the moment with a joke about being in a parked car together at night. To which you get out.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Nothing intimate would really happen between you two, and despite his jokes, he cherishes the fact that your relationship isn't fueled by lust.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 You guys would walk. Old leaves and branches blanket the land, and at the slightest shiver, he huffs. He says a smooth - but corny - line about how his jacket looks better on you. He'd stuff the leather coat into your hand like he couldn't care less.

But he most definitely does care. When you put the jacket on, he'd fix the collar, knuckles brushing the skin of your neck. The moment breaks when he clears his throat and turns.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 That's the weird thing. Dean does shoot one liners at you, but in the way he does to everybody, so somehow, the flirty attitude makes everything seem less flirty. But in small moments, you two would always catch yourselves close together without even realizing it, and the moments are so raw and unplanned. But he'd always back off. Like he can flirt with everyone but you.

So, he turns to head back to the car and jumps. A deer. Directly behind you two. "Man, I hate that!" he'd curse. You'd laugh. The deer would just stare with huge eyes. You'd look around and there would be birds and squirrels staring. Dean would shudder "Come on we're going back . . . it's like you brought something with you from that town. somethin' fuckin weird."

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢"What if I'm the something weird?" You'd ask him sometimes. He'd always deny it every time. "But if it was you . . . I think I could handle that." He'd always brush it off like he's dealt with worse, so he'll let it slide. Just because he doesn't care of course. . . definitely not because he does care.

Sam Winchester:

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Sam begged dean to take this job. A weird town where things just go up missing? he went on and on about similar anomalies like Bermuda, dragons, and Alaskan triangles. He was so curious how such a thing happened on land.

Of course, dean didn't want to up and disappear, but how could he deny his nerdy baby brother.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 And it's safe to say that Sam was very much appeased with the mysteries of the town, especially the local that worked at the inn. The front desk was always empty. in fact, the whole town seemed empty, until someone needed them. He went up to the abandoned desk, and you had scared him by coming up from behind.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Every time you appear it's ominous, and the lights seem to flicker. And for some reason, it drew him in. The beat-up old town gave the feeling of always being watched, and with you, he liked it.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 When the mystery was coming to an end, he was surprised how strange you remained, even after the curse was lifted. And for some even stranger reason, he liked that too.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He had asked you to get some coffee. It was 11pm, he was nervous, okay?

You agreed.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Which is how the ritual began. every time he passed through the area, he'd stop by your town. You two would sit in a dark, eerie diner in the middle of the night and have coffee. Maybe some sweets.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He didn't tell anyone where he went. Hunters don't make friends. or go on dates.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 A year into this Rythm, something changed. He patted his knee and said "Alrighty, I should go."

Typically, you would say goodbye, or just watch him go, maybe even hug him. But this time, as he reached the door, he heard a quiet "don't."

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 That was all it took. At the first request to be by his side, he invited you to come along with him. So, you did. And so, you met dean, who faintly remembered you as the desk clerk.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Dean will never let it go, and poor Sam gets teased about it regularly: "So that's where you've been disappearing off to, huh?" nudge nudge.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Once you guys were together regularly, it didn't take long for Sam to ask you to make it official. He's a sap, after all.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Sam is a sweet boyfriend. He tries his best to let you handle yourself, but he can get quite defensive if someone mentions how you dress or calls you creepy.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 The first time you called him Sammy, he paused and didn't correct you, and after a beat, Dean looks over and gets fussy because that's his thing.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Sam is big on showing his love clearly. He'll have you by his side, one arm thrown around you when researching. Or whenever you scare him (yes, your quiet arrivals still get to him) he'll laugh and grab your face "Did I ever tell you how much I love you?" The answer is always yes, about an hour ago.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Sam still likes to stay up with you like before. Books everywhere, cicadas thrumming and chittering outside, and your hand in his hair. He LOVES to lay on your chest while you scratch his scalp, its the best after a long day.

Castiel:

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He was watching over dean when he first saw you. The Winchesters were consulting you - a fellow hunter - on a plan of theirs. You were a part of a hunting family down south in a real dead spot. the silence allowed for peace, but all the anger, religion and tragedy in the surrounding towns made for good work.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He was curious, so of course, he appeared. Nosy as hell, as always.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He appeared and stared at you with squinting eyes. Nobody but you seemed to notice, so you look to the boys and ask, "who's your little friend?" To which Cas curiously tilts his head.

The boys give you a short, fleeting backstory on Castiel, who doesn't bother correcting errors or adding on. He's distracted.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 There's something about you that's different. usually, he would assess someone and immediately know all he needed. But when he's near you, it's like all his buzzing thoughts fizzle out, but the crease in his brows deepens.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He'd find any reason to "help" Dean whenever you worked with the boys.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Whenever your work with the Winchesters was done, you went back home. Only to turn around and see Castiel

You asked him why he was here, but he only walked past you at first, walking the front hall covered in dozens of different crosses and symbols. When he reaches an old portrait of your family, he stops and says "I . . . wanted to."

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 That's all the explanation you got. It's all you needed, really. An Angel wants to spend time with you. Yet somehow, he never showed up when any other soul was in the house.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 Whenever he wasn't with Dean, he was with you. Always lurking and curious about you. The two of you were strange in your own ways, but that's what made it work. you were so similar.

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He worries for you a lot, not that he'd realize. But whenever you're fresh back from a hunt, dripping with monster blood, cross necklace hanging over your heaving chest, knife sliding back in its sheath. He appears. His brows are pinched tightly, and he approaches swiftly, standing only a few inches apart.

You stare back at the angel, lights flashing from outside, a shadow of wings appearing behind him. He grabs you by your shoulders, and you raise a bloodstained hand, smoothing out the crease in his brow, while his blue eyes are trained on you, hands parting your coat and checking for wounds.

"You're worried"

"I am not."

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 But he keeps showing up, and he always makes sure you're okay, always rasping "are you hurt?"

⋆‧°𓏲ּ𝄢 He never realized how many boundaries he was breaking by getting so close and grabbing you until he did it in front of Sam and Dean.
