On this day, July 19 in 1821, George IV was crowned King of the United Kingdom, one of the least liked of British monarchs whose reign was marred by scandal, financial irresponsibility, gluttony, debauchery, and generally boorish behavior. We mark the occasion with the 2-volume Memoirs of Caroline, Queen Consort of England by Robert Huish, published in London by Thomas Kelly in 1820, a year before the coronation.
The King and Queen despised each other and had lived separately since 1794. Caroline had been living on the continent since 1814, but on this day she chose to return for her husband's coronation and be acknowledged as the queen consort. George, however, had Caroline turned away from Westminster Abbey at bayonet point. That night, she fell ill and died almost three weeks later on August 7. It was rumored that she had been poisoned. Her coffin is inscribed with "Here lies Caroline, the Injured Queen of England.” George would go on to reign for another, nine debauched years. When he died in 1830 The Times expressed that --
There never was an individual less regretted by his fellow-creatures than this deceased king. What eye has wept for him? What heart has heaved one throb of unmercenary sorrow? . . . If he ever had a friend – a devoted friend in any rank of life – we protest that the name of him or her never reached us.
Shown here are the engraved title pages and portraits of George, Caroline, and their only daughter Princess Charlotte of Wales, who also disliked her father and died in childbirth in 1817 at the age of 21. The only signed engraving is that of Queen Caroline, engraved by Robert Cooper (fl. 1793-1836).
