A Robber Fly I spotted! First time seeing one of these guys! Pretty neat!

i believe this is a Northeastern Plumetop (Ommatius tibialis). i love seeing unusual flies in my garden (unusual as in, not a house fly, fungus gnat, common bottle flies, etc.) - things like syrphid flies, robber flies, and condylostylus flies are so fun to spot and try to photograph and ID!
robber flies have those little hairs under their eyes (called a mystax, which is greek for mustache and sounds like a fun way of addressing someone, and is also a word i have been saying over and over again because it is fun to say) and they are known to be aggressive predators, catching many of their prey midair! hopefully they’re visiting my garden to help take down whatever is eating my monarch caterpillars… but that’s just the circle of life baby!
im always trying to identify plants and animals for funsies, in one of my bug quests i came across an r/whatisthisbug post of a robber fly (indeed like the one i had seen) looking out of a window wistfully. its even got its little paw on the glass. who is returning from the war soon thats got this thang so melancholic…

🗺️ Western NY, United States A robber fly (Asilidae sp.) I saw yesterday. It was just flitting between various plants at a clearing on the edge of the woods. I think this may be a bladetail (Machimus sp.) but I don't know much about robber flies at all, so I could be completely wrong (and please correct me if anyone knows) Either way, wowwww what a pointy critter.....
Given the sharpness of that tail, I'm inclined to agree that it's a bladetail!
