Spoilers ahead for road kill and a really long review (long story short I really loved it and so recommend trying to watch it)
First off I LOVE how it’s filmed, the mix between still and found footage was perfect and I love how even the regularly filmed parts still felt like a student film….as if Alex had made it himself.
The dynamic between everyone was very nice and the lack of romance made it 10x better (although Alex and Lars did spend half the movie bickering like an old married couple lmao), the characters all had great chemistry and the actors bounced off each other very well.
Some parts were slower but in a way they set the tone…also the way the climax was simple and short as if again we are viewing from Alex’s point of view, he had built up this image in his head and become SO focused on it that when it actually happened it was as if he was disappointed.
Blue: blues journey was one of the best in the film, and I sort of hate how she is described on the cover. Two things were correct but using her attractiveness felt sort of iffy with her story and with her dynamic with the other two, her attractiveness is not at all the point of the movie and several of the posters make it seem that way. Anyway I love how she is portrayed as confident and guarded but by the end she falls apart, she also has hopes and dreams but when discussing this she pushes Alex away keeping this image that he has of her but eventually she does fulfil this and still keeps in contact with Alex and Lars
Alex: Alex was quite a funny character, he was often snarky at times that weren’t appropriate and he was a bit of a goof. But we see him go from terrified of blue to almost obsessed with her (not in a romantic way or even a sexual way but in a film making way) he views everything through a lens and when it doesn’t go right it causes him to get more frustrated as the movie goes on and now he is the one that is terrifying rather than blue. His ark ends with not being able to take the shot, literally, he realises that this is real life and puts down the camera to stop blue…then comes back to finish the job but ultimately can’t with the stark difference of him being joyful while shooting the gun in the earlier scene to absolutely terrified in this one.
Lars: Lars ultimately doesn’t have a huge shift in the movie and i mostly feel bad for him, Alex wasn’t the best of friends at times and Lars was often the victim in Alex’s crazy film hungry dreams. Only in the end did lars find his passion for art again…just cost him a toe. However blues caring and kindness for Lars was one of my favourite parts.
The acting was amazing from all of them but the scene with blues foster “farther” was definitely the standout scene, blues anger and then desperation was hard to watch because it felt so real and then Alex’s grapple with morality later was very well done too.
I also love Alex’s wardrobe, in his very first scene he wears brown and grey, hes lost his passion but is ultimately hiding behind this snarky facade so dark colours are used but the brown still pops in a way. next scene he is in a bright yellow shirt, here his idea develops further and he passionately talks about movies. Then later in the movie when he has fallen into this madness for the movie he is wearing all dark clothing but finally when he has completed this movie and he’s showing his professor, we see the yellow polo again.
“What’s my favourite movie Alex” “the godfather?” Not the time bro😭
