"'πΊ π²ππ!' π΄ππππππππ, πππ 'πΊ π²ππ!' πππππ πππ πππππ..." - Robert Louis Stevenson π―π―π―π―π―π―π― 170 years and a day ago, Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson (d. 1894) was born. π₯ Famous in the shadows of the literary world for his 1886 gothic novella, 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', Stevenson was also an accomplished travel writer and author of children's adventure story 'Treasure Island' (1883). π₯ In the years preceding publication of the latter, Stevenson lived in the pictured French Hotel - a boarding house in Monterey. He travelled through "Sacramento, the city of gardens" ('The Amateur Emigrant', 1911), just two days before arriving in Monterey on August 30th, 1879, where he sought and married his love, Fanny Osbourne. π₯ Vastly different from the European terrain he was used to, Stevenson became obsessed with the Californian landscapes going as far as to start his own forest fire... You know, in the name of 'science'. π₯ I don't mean to start rumours, but around the time of the literary arsonist's forest adventure, illness struck. To be clear, he had been ill before, & he'd be ill again, but he was also definitely ill around this time too, so... the forest took vengeance, that's all. π₯ This pic is a throwback to stateside times... but either way: π―Happy Stevenson's birthday, one and all! . #robertlouisstevenson #rlstevenson #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #classichorror #literaryhistory #bookstagram #books #jekyllandhyde #stevenson #englishliterature #bookworm #classicliterature #generallygothic#gothic #spookynerd #gothicnovel #gothicfiction #monterey #california (at Monterey, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRci6hgTKe/?utm_medium=tumblr
