āĀ SEPTEMBER 2017 SPHERE EVALUATION
Ā ėģ¼ ė Ā :Ā ITāS ME (Ā PICK ME S2 )Ā Ā :Ā ( 0:00ā1:46 )
170923 D-7Ā Ā |Ā Ā minseoās voice comes clear through his laptop speakers:Ā āiād rank you a c.ā sheās just finished watching jinwook dance ā the video is a few months old, recorded in preparation of sphereās summer street performances, but itās the best that jinwookās ever been. at the time, heād been quite proud of the progress. still, based on the lack of enthusiasm, he guesses that his little sister is being generous. sheās always had a sharp eye for detail, in which jinwookās abilities are clearly lacking.
with a sigh, jinwook props his chin up in a hand. āthanks, minnie. cās not half bad, right?ā itās just about the average grade that jinwook was accustomed to receiving in school. he drags her skype window to the side of his desktop, opening the practice clip again. his technique doesnāt improve much on the twentieth replay. āexcept.. i wonāt sing in my evaluation, so whatās the honestĀ judgment, with no vocals?" he bites his lip, a quiet chuckle sliding by. asking to be ranked Ć Ā la produce 101Ā started off as a joke. within five minutes, though, minseo has watched him, judged him, and convinced him to learn the actual choreography from the show. jinwook is already feeling the pressure.Ā
he braces for the worst as his sister hesitates, twirling a piece of hair around her finger. ā...well,ā she starts after a moment,Ā āmaybe it doesnāt matter?ā jinwook groans, and laughter brightens minseoās whole face on screen. āyou do have some good facial expressions going for you! like yāknow, bae jinyoung oppa was an f trainee once, and he turned out just fine!ā
she shakes her head, taking on a matter-of-fact tone.Ā āheās doing better than fine, actually. he still got to debut. and you will, too.ā
debut. minseo makes good points about the song choice, at least. if a hundred idol hopefuls had to learn the dance for a shot at debut, jinwook thinks itās a fair gauge for his personal rite of passage, too.
at the same time, itās a gamble. the choreography is difficult, and expectations will be high, and if jinwook canāt keep up, maybe baek jiyoung will send him off the ship entirely. maybe they really will fail him. debut plans shift all the time, and sphere isnāt obligated to honor his commitment just because jinwook told them he wanted it.
so itās an opportunity to reassure himself as much as it is for his coaches to evaluate. for all his lamenting, he really does feel like his dance skill has been goingĀ somewhere since the summer. even if minseo barely gave him so much as a passing rank.Ā
and for all the insecurities about why meĀ and feeling his debut chance is undeserved, maybe this will prove it to himself, calm his worries until the next ones arise;
and ifĀ and when jinwook does debut, maybe heāll rest easier with the shared experience of a hundred others.
170926 D-4Ā |Ā āi think i should switch to pick meĀ from season one. baekhyun tried to teach me that one last summer. i remember complaining a lot, but i donāt think the girlsā choreography was as hard as this one.āĀ jinwook is frowning in front of his laptop again, rubbing out a sore shoulder. itās amazing how much a day or two of struggle has managed to change his attitude toward the challenge. ādance bootcamp is justāā he mimes chomping jaws, eyes blown wide. the room is dim, but his teeth flash bright white in the webcam preview. āāitās trying to eat me alive.ā
back in jeju, minseo appears unamused. āitās barely been two days, oppa.ā she tsks.Ā āyou shouldnāt give up on yourself so easily.ā
he shouldnāt.Ā but he can, and he does more often than not. itās always been this way ā jinwook is disciplined in many ways, but other mountains seem impossible to climb, soĀ why bother making a fool of himself?
āitās just the way i am... you know that.ā
his sister frowns at that, but itās the barely-suppressed sigh and eye-roll that get to him ā as if itās so ridiculous to even suggest such a thing. part of jinwook is baiting her to prove him wrong. heās exhausted, so heās not hiding anything, and besides, jinwook really believes it sometimes.Ā itās unacceptable for an idol, though - for a group that will be asked, who is the most diligent, where the answer may be murky among the rest of the shining sphere boys, but no one will think of jinwook. maybe they will scoff to themselves as they glance over him in consideration.
jinwookās eyes flicker to the clock in the corner of his screen. itās late, but the twins are studying for entrance exams this time of year. they hardly ever sleep, so minseo probably needs the break. jinwook doesnāt feel too bad about it. sheād never ignore a call from him anyway.
she knows that this is when he needs her most often: when heās home alone after training; when his coaches are too harsh but eve isĀ too understanding; when itās too late to call his grandmother; jinwookās little sister will unfailingly give him a fresh perspective. sheāll tell it to him straight:
āthatās just the way you are?Ā you canāt dance because youāre lazy?ā minseo laughs with all the spunk of an incredulous seventeen year-old. ālike, that excuse is bullshit and you know it.ā
jinwook expected as much. he knows that hearing it from her holds him more accountable, but he flinches anyway; sometimes his baby sister can make him feel like the smaller one.Ā āthatās not what iām really saying.āĀ lazy isnāt the right word. itās so discouraging, though, to sweat all morning in dance workshops, then come back from lunch only to start from scratch, every step muddled and forgotten. every day the same story. whenever jinwook feels like he has the basics down, the next move throws him for a loop all over again. heāsĀ discouraged. maybeĀ pessimistic, but he would hate to associate that word with his personality.
he swallows hard. the same voice gets stuck in his head every time he starts learning a new choreography. how could minseo understand? his little sister has always been so much more talented, even with things that jinwook taught her himself. everything came more naturally to her. āi know you donāt get itāā
āāand i know youāre not lazy,ā interrupts minseo. āfor real, is that what youāre gonna say? that i donāt get it because iām a better dancer than you? yeah, we knew that, oppa.ā minseo pauses and finally checks her tone. the sneer falls and a strand of hair flutters with her next breath, making the video stream lag for a moment. when she speaks again, jinwook is relieved to hear something less abrasive. ābut how do you think you made it so far already?ā minseo softens.Ā ālike, as far as iām concerned, youāve had to work even harder to catch up this whole time? it doesnāt make sense to give yourself an out now?ā
all of jinwookās heart jumps at her sincerity, yearning to agree.Ā āi know youāre right,ā he says,Ā āitās just frustrating.ā he just wishes this past year of dance workshops could feel like itās worthĀ somethingĀ when heās still lagging behind, even in this bootcamp, where none of the other participants specialize in dance either.
his brain tells him his time investment is worth something; jinwook knows this to be true when he digs up archives of older workshops and compares them to his skills today. he prefers to be known for his optimism at sphere too, so to minseo he is eternally grateful for bearing the burden of the more negative moments.Ā his heart still weighs heavier in weeks like these, but he can feel it lighten the longer she stays online with him.
ādonāt worry,ā he says suddenly. ādonāt they get three days of practice in the show?ā jinwook tries to let out his tension with a weak chuckle. āi guess i still owe it one more try?ā
āyeah,ā says minseo, āthey do. and you do.ā she purses her lips as a long moment of quiet passes, but doesnāt push the lecture further. āwanna show me what youāve got so far?ā she warms her expression with an encouraging smile that has all of her usual energy, but the edges carefully softened. āyāknow i learned this one back when it first aired, right?ā
170928 D-2Ā |Ā jinwook sets his laptop on top of a makeshift computer stand and cautiously steps back, checking its balance. this is one of the more remote practice studios in the building, so the wifi range can be spotty ā a sigh of relief leaves his lips when minseo answers the call, appears on his screen and waves hello.
āiāll make this quick,ā says jinwook once the connection stabilizes,Ā āsince iām not sure if youāre supposed to see inside sphere. but iām one of the last ones around tonight, so ā you wonāt tell on me, right?ā he grins.Ā ājust calling to show you that iām all caught up to the evaluation segment on produce 101 now~ā
āit took me a little too long to get it down... but today i worked with a coach iāve never had before ā something about her really made things click this time?ā less lefts and rights and fluid counts; more about relative placement and movements matched to lyrics. itād made a world of difference before jinwook even registered the subtle shift in vocabulary. he chuckles sheepishly.Ā āi know that sounds silly. things donāt really clickĀ for me, so it probably helped that iāve been re-learning the same sections all week, though.ā jinwook can feel himself rambling but he knows minseo wonāt mind. it must be pleasant to see his usual optimistic self after all his doubts prior.
his sister is five years younger but heās considered her his equal for a long time; in some ways, both minseo andĀ minjae seem more mature than jinwook. he already knows the twins will both do better than him on their university entrance exams. it will only be a year or two from now that they eclipse his education level entirely.
heās struggled a lot with insecurities there, but minseo never makes him feel stupidĀ even if she can be blunt. she holds an elegant self-assurance in contrast to minjaeās arrogance; one that always lifts jinwook up in the end.Ā āthatās not dumb,ā says minseo. her excitement is genuine, eyes bright. heās grateful that she doesnāt acknowledge his fickle swings in attitude toward the song. āitās so cool, see? maybe you were only missing the right instructor this whole time. cāmon, lemme see!ā
jinwookās steps arenāt perfect or delicate, but theyāre moreĀ legible than they used to be. he watches himself in the mirror and tries to stay within view of his laptopās webcam. one day heāll fix his body lines and hunched shoulders. for now, heās content to keep his feet on the ground and a smile on his face. itās more than a solid start.
thereās lag to the video call, but he knows minseo will humor him regardless. when he returns to his laptop, he sings a line: āplease remember this moment~ tonight~~ā
āi will remember this moment, tonight~ā minseo sings her promise to the same melody, giggling.Ā āyou were so much better, oppa. seriously, i think youāll get the rest done in no time!ā
āitās a big surprise, isnāt it? iāll do my best.ā jinwook is pleased, but can hear sleepiness in her tone now. he tries to wipe away the heartache that comes with that realization. he wishes he could tuck her in or something, but he hasnāt seen her in over a year.Ā āyou should get to sleep,ā he adds.Ā āthanks for the feedback, minnie. just donāt get your expectations up tooĀ high.ā
she smiles in a knowing way. āgood luck on saturday, i think youāll surprise yourself even more.ā she raises an encouraging fist before disconnecting. ākim jinwook fighting~ goodnight, oppa.ā
jinwook dances one last time that night, spontaneously singing over the track along with the choreography. itās ambitious, given his exhaustion and the songās high vocal range, but if jinwook doesnāt sound great, at least he remembers all the steps. heāll forgive himself for that.
he packs up his laptop and plugs in headphones before he leaves. he thinks of sphere and of debutĀ as he runs the choreography in his head:Ā pick me, pick me, up. please pick my heart.
his chest feels lighter on the walk home.
171001 D+1Ā |Ā he emails minseo the video from his final pre-evaluation practice, watching it back a few times before he hits send.Ā
tonight the star is me, itās me, itās me~
the last person to steal your heart~~Ā ć ć
im ready for my new rank? šš
her video call arrives only a few minutes later. jinwook answers and speaks quickly over her greeting: āactually, please donāt judge me. iāll be happier without knowing.ā he laughs, nerves spiking. āi just wanted you to see it.ā
āohā jinwook oppa, are you sure you donāt want your re-evaluation?ā he can hear painted fingernails clicking against her desk, and a drawn-out hum of consideration. āiāll spoil it and tell you that youāre not an f, at least.ā
she giggles. āi mean it this time!āā minseoās eyes curve up when sheās amused, the same way jinwookās do.Ā āā really,Ā you did well.āĀ šø

Splitting off into what was considered their āworstā skill, wasnāt all that troubling for Seulgi.Ā She actually wasnāt a bad singer, all things considered, she just wasnāt as good at it as she was her dancing.Ā She was actually looking forward to getting out on stage and singing for once, showing how far along she had come.Ā Sheād probably dance too as her ability to do both at the same time had gotten much better over her course of training at Sphere as well.
Something she was having a little bit of a hard time with was approaching Luna.Ā It hadnāt taken much for the rumor that she had been thinking about joining the Royal Survival Show and leaving Sphere behind.Ā In reality, it was Soojung who ended up leaving, but Seulgi had certainly been a little hurt by the thought that her former MGA coach might be abandoning the company she had represented just a little over a year before.Ā Luna was however in the singing group with her, so she put that aside for the moment.Ā āHey...did you figure out what you wanted to sing?ā
the more woohyun dances, the more woohyun realizes you can put forth just as much emotion into it as you can do with singing. heās not a dancer at heart, thatās for sure-- but woohyunās always wore his heart on his sleeve; heās always been able to display his emotions loud and clear, and itās hard for anyone to read them wrong. heās an open book, a willing one-- one hundred percent ready to bare open his heart and let the masses take a peek inside.
this is just an evaluation, but itās more than that.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā this could be the last evaluation as a kt trainee -- and thatās a thought that propels woohyun forward. it makes him want to work harder, showcase his work. if woohyun is going to leave, if heās going out to try to debut under sphere, the least he could do is give it his all and give the very best he did as a kt trainee.
kt deserves it. everyone there deserves nothing but the best so woohyun will give it all in full.Ā
when the song starts woohyun shuts his eyes and exhales, offers a lazy smile on his face as his body moves automatically to the beat. little sways and jerks and slight movements of the beat as he lets his body find a natural rhythm, remember practice and the muscle memory. he pops his body and move his arms, teeth biting into his lip as he tries to keep it as up to the beat as possible; popping isnāt something heās good at, but the song doesnāt have a whole lot of it so heās thankful for that.
once he hears the lyrics being spoken up, background at first-- woohyun steels himself. he inhales sharply, and tightens his body. once the lyrics starts and the beat gets faster along with the words, his body moves, feet shuffling and arms moving, sharp movements and stretches that he does with a concentrated face and held breath.Ā
in general, the song is fun. a lot of spin movement, exaggerated arm stretches and wide swings. the further he gets into it, the more his face relaxes; a smile takes over as he lets his body move into muscle memory, enjoy the feel of the beat. he has more fun at a part with his arms stretched out and slow movements forward as he spins his arm. itās a fun, slower move that requires a lot of focus on his part, but the sight of it in the practice mirrors always brought a smile to his face so he hopes it does the same for the ones watching.
he slides across the floor, arms following the movement of the beat and mouth moving the some of the words he can understand. his clothes brush on his skin with each movement, and woohyun exhales sharply through his nose, eyes narrowed with focus.Ā
once the chorus hits and woohyunās left arm raises high as his waist and hips move along with the song, he steers himself for the breakdown. he swallows tight but tries to loosen up the features of his face so he doesnāt look like heās struggling or itās hard. his feet move across the floor as his arms move in tangent with his other limbs.Ā
once the beat drops, heās moving-- body going into muscle memory as he exhales, lips quirking up and eyes falling shut as he jerks his body into the proper motions. once the breakdown moves into the next chorus does woohyun begin to slow-- the song fading out as he breathes out harshly, raking a hand through his hair as he stills.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā if thereās anything he knows, itās that he did his best to showcase what heās learned so far. heās come a long way, and he hopes that the coaches think so as well.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā SEPTEMBER EVALUTATION - RAP PERFORMANCE
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā BY LEE DONGMIN FROM ROYAL ENTERTAINMENT
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ( song - outfitĀ - lyrics under cut )Ā
this months eval had been a source of entertainment for the teen. unlike the last few evaluations he has gone through, dongmin felt a bit more at ease with this one. part because he wasnāt going to have to figure out how to rap all on how own, and also because while in the process of trying to figure out what he was going to do, the teen had been struck with such an amazing idea.
while he is sure some other traineeās in the rap group would probably try and write their own, dongmin was aware he wouldnāt be able to do something like that. at least not make a rap that would be fun to listen too. something that either made sense, told a story, or got his emotions across. he can still barely write a song ( tho he does think he has improved in his composing ). so why not go for something fun, while also working on his rapping ability. after all, if the company wants him to be prepared for anything they throw at him, then they should be prepared for whatever wild idea he can come up with.
might as well show them he isnāt afraid to go out of his element.
and thats pretty much what he has done with this evaluation. as dongmin has really only ever done slow ballad style songs in the past. this songārap, is nothing at all like the oneās he has done in the past. if he was someone who placed bets, then he would bet that his choice of song would surprise pretty much everyone in the company.
he didnāt tell anyone what he was doing, he never worked on it in the company where someone might have over heard. this was very hush hush. even going so far as to practice a slow rap that was much more his style. he wanted to wow people when he does his performance.
once his turn was up for the eval, dongmin channeled as much of that swag swag nature that lisa noona and him has talked about. trying to pretty much before the personification of swagāimpossible because lisa and elly are both much more swag likeāso he could do this song right. his outfit had been carefully constructed, picking something out of the decade the song he picked was from. Ā
he started slower, building the song. using the relaxed motions he had seen being used in the countless of videos he watched of others singing this song. wanting to really portray himself as a chill, and swag rapper. saying the opening to the rap like he was some kind of announcer to a big hip rap off. honestly, its a wonder why dongmin isnāt embarrassed by this. he should be, by every natural right of the land, he should be so embarrassed by his choice. an endless sea of talented hip hop artist in the whole of korea and he goes for this song.
honestly, dongmin could probably do this rap in his sleep now. he has gone over it so many times while learning it that he will never forget the english alphabet ever again. itās such a good thing heās fluent in english already or this could have been so super messy, but he is fluent-- and now he can add a bunch of other songs to his list of ones he knows. which is both good and bad. some of these songs he doesnāt even know the meaning behind them-- having not taken the time to go over them. that can always come later, he supposes. right now he wants to give the best performance he possible can with the time he is given.
the rap ended much smoother than he had figured it would. having been afraid he would run out of breath and mess up a line. guess he is getting more stamina than he first thought he was. when he ended, there was a strong urge to do a mic drop-- but he had already probably gone over board with the rap he choose. so he didnāt want to push it. the minute he was done channeling that inner rapper, the teens shyness showed up. a small blush forming on his cheeks as he bowed and thanked everyone. thus ending his stage.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā Ā Ā Ā Ā MY AFFLICTION, Ā IāM ADDICTED, I CANāT LIE Ā Ā Ā ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ( Ā Ā *BABY Ā Ā ) Ā Ā KISS ME ONE MORE TIME BEFORE I DIE
sheād been feeling sluggish for weeks. it wasnāt that she was lacking in energy. truth told, she had too much. restlessness gathers in her core, her cells are electrified, dying to move and all she can do is stay still ā poison courses through her veins, slowly paralyzing her in place.
thatās what the break-up feels like.
what bothers her most is that itās not the first time sheās thought so, not the first time sheāsĀ felt this way. because from the first kiss, she knew his lips were the taste of the sweetest poison.
itās not the first time, so why, why, just why in the hell didnāt she know better?
too good to be true, thatās what she called it from the very start because heās too cheesy, too understanding, too wonderful in all the right ways. she could fall in love ( read as: she did ) and cassie nailed that right on the head. āhe gets you,ā she said, and tiffany denied it to the very end.
she denied it in the same way she denied him the chance to get her. a relationship where even the wrongs become right was now one that fell apart with one word. a word that shattered everything because insecurity claims them both. theyāre too alike after all.
too stubborn to fix it.
too stubborn to give in.
yet, thereās just too much theyāre giving up. thereās no immediate symptoms. the poison that is him takes his sweet time and she still smiles, still functions, still pretends nothing is wrong.
nothing is, right?
more like, nothingās right.
the poison takes hold, lays claim, dominates and destroys; but before it wrecks everything sheās worked for, she uses it to her advantage, lets it thinks it has the final verdict. just like a joke between her and bobby, tiffany insists you think what you want ā because no matter how dominant a personality bobby has, it was always tiffany that made the final choice.
she has to tell herself she chose this. the same way she chose her dream, just as she told her mga team ā if this is your dream, act like it. so she chooses a song and everything falls into place. even when she falls on her ass, she picks herself right back up and goes back into position.
the love she lost sheāll focus on giving to herself.
however lost she feels, however sad she feels, it wonāt hinder her but itāll become herstrength. if heās both the poison and the cure, sheāll build a tolerance all on her own.
her muscles ache, her body cries for rest, and her soul begs to sing instead of dance, but she has to. because sometimes words just arenāt enough. lyrics wrap around her heart and instead of lips parting, itās feet that move, controlled movements of her arms, a dance that she didnāt think would mean so much. cassie thought she needed to sing, needed to cry, but as she stands in front of the trainers who sheād seen this entire week, she knows, maybe, just maybe, she needed to dance.
the lyrics of her motherās favorite song drift, play over the melody in her mind for a moment, and she feels an overwhelming sense of comfort.
i hope you dance ā for once, tiffany hopes for the same. more than learning the choreography, it was about not looking awkward, about not looking out of place, and if thereās something tiffany is most grateful to bobby for teaching her right now, itās being confident in her own skin. sheād thought she appreciated herself before until he showed her she could dobetter.
( Ā Ā ā«, Ā youāre bad for me, i clearly get it
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā i donāt see how something good
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā could come from loving you
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā the death of me must be your mission
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā cause with every hug and kiss
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā youāre snatching every bit of strength
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā that iām gonā need to fight off the inevitable
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and itās a heart breakinā situation iām up in, but i canāt control Ā Ā ) Ā
this is what itās like to truly let go, and until sheās ready to let go completely of him, thisāll do. more than energy, itās her pent-up frustration, her irritation, her anger, her sadness, howconflicted sheās been. anything and everything sheās thought bubbles through to the surface, dangles on her fingertips, spill out in her gestures, and itās love that wins out.
( Ā Ā ā«, Ā youāre just like poison
Ā Ā Ā slowly moving through my system
Ā Ā Ā breaking all of my defences with time
Ā Ā Ā youāre just like poison and i just donāt get it
Ā Ā Ā how can something so deadly feel so right?
Ā Ā Ā iām not sure of what to do itās a catch 22
Ā Ā Ā cause the cure is found in you
Ā Ā Ā i donāt want it but i do, youāre just like poison Ā Ā ) Ā
because no matter what she thinks, no matter how she feels, no matter if logic should win, sheās still addicted. heās her poison and all her strength leaves her in that final drop. it feels like a fruitless resolution because sheās still there, still poisoned, but sheās stronger than the day before. a better dancer for it. who knows, maybe this is the answer sheād be looking for, but for now Ā ā Ā my affliction, Iām addicted, i canāt lie, kiss me one more time before i die, Ā ā”

āOh hush. Iām not stupid, and Iām not one of your handlers. Iām not going to tell on you. We picked out this song together, there was a reason you were drawn to it, youāre going to be an idol, nobodyās going to believe you singing this song if you donāt believe it. Right now I donāt believe it. You picked a song about love now talk to me about love.ā
āI...ā
āItās not against the rules to feel, Changhyun.ā
āSeongsaengnim-ā
āCall me noona, if you want.ā
āNoona...respectfully...If they want us to be in love...to sing about love...why do they make it against the rules?ā
She only sighed in response. Itās a sigh that rings through his memory now, when he glances across the room toward the spot where she sits, smiling slightly and unreadable between two of the other vocal coaches he worked with, in a row of familiar faces which are all somehow comforting and intimidating all at once.
āWhenever youāre ready,ā someone closer to the center says, and he takes a deep breath, both hands clinging to the microphone on its stand as if itās the only thing keeping his head afloat.
Heās nervous, so incredibly nervous. Thereās not baby grand or upright for him to hide behind while he sings, she nixed that idea right off the bat. How often do idols gets to sing behind a piano anyway, she reminded him. So now heās stuck in the middle of the room, pairs of eyes glued to him, all belonging to industry professionals who have worked with some of the best vocalists in the business. Itās in his nature to wonder what they must think of him, what they must be thinking right now in this moment. Itās so much for him to think about, when he starts imagining all the possibilities: what will they write down on their clipboards, comments about his posture (he squares his shoulders, tilts his chin down, feels room in his chest for his lungs to expand), or his facial expressions (he consciously pulls his jaw apart where it was clenched anxiously a moment before, feels the muscles in his face start to loosen, the lines between his brow slowly softening to smooth skin). And thatās all before heās even started singing.
His tone is steady, though his breath control falters whenever he recalls his nervousness, whenever he accidentally makes eye contact with one of the familiar faces sitting on the other side of the room. A hand leaves the microphone only for a few moments, to rest on his abdomen, a reminder to himself to make sure heās utilizing his diaphragm like he should be.
By the time he gets to the second chorus, he realizes heās singing, only singing, not feeling. He feels her disappointment before he sees it, glances up mid lyric to see her smile has faded into a slight scowl and pursed lips. He tries to communicate an apology without stopping the song, glances warily across the line of coaches, who watch him so unfalteringly it makes his stomach turn nervously. But he taps into forbidden, suppressed emotions nonetheless, tentatively, like dipping a toe in water.
He closes his eyes for a moment, just a moment, but a moment is all it takes. He sees Sohee, hair long and mussed, skin smelling of vanilla, eyes red and teary as she ended it all. Something seizes up in his chest, not his normal crippling anxiety, because heās not allowed to feel the way he did (does?) about her, and yet here he is, singing to her in front of a panel of people who taught him how. Hs clings to the microphone with both hands, as if he might drown if he lets go.
You enter my heart
You keep touching my heart
You pound on my heart
You blow in warmth into my heart
It feels like his breaths get caught in his throat, and he has to fight himself so emotions donāt strain his notes, and his own pained scowl has returned, and how on earth does anyone sing in these conditions-
I am right here right now
I am looking at you by your side
My trembling heart is telling me
You are the one, you are the one
When he finishes the song his favorite boot camp coach is smiling again, but heās clenching his jaw to bite back the inevitable as he hastily bows and thanks the room, and the camera, for their time.
He only aggressively scrubs a tear from his cheek with a sleeve when he steps into the hallway, safe from watching eyes.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ... performing NOT IN THAT WAY by SAM SMITH
it was never something ten thought heād be any good at, or good enough to stand out in - singing was something that you either were amazing at, or mediocre at at best. ten thought himself the latter. that being said, he far preferred singing to rapping, as heād only realised that year, after accepting that he really didnāt have the demeanour to be a rapper. heād practised, and worked so hard to improve his singing since that realisation, knowing full well heād never be able to be an idol unless he could either sing, or rap.Ā
so when september comes, and the evaluation is announced, ten canāt help but feel slightly excited. heās eager to show that heās improved since he was first signed. it doesnāt feel like heās been in trc all that long, as the days pass by in busy blurs, but he can see the difference in his skills, at least. his singing especially has improved under the guidance of the vocal trainer. heās unlearnt bad habits, and formed the solid foundations to build upon to improve his voice.Ā
but the time comes to pick the song heās going to perform, and a single song comes to mind. itās one heās been listening to rather frequently over the past month, the lyrics resonating with him so deeply that he canāt get it out of his head. sometimes he wonders whether everyone has trouble talking about their worries, their fears, or their secrets. most people at least confide in a close friend, donāt they? so why canāt ten? why is that every time he tries to tell someone that he feels like heād drowning, nothing comes out?
he puts all of himself into the song, because maybe someone will hear the desperation and loneliness that clings to every note, every word, and causes his voice to break every time he practises alone, tears threatening to spill. maybe heās afraid of how he feels, and heās not surprised at the fact, not after the pain of last time. trying to move past this point in his life is the best way to save himself from that same pain enveloping him again.Ā
jaehyun had unknowingly left him entirely terrified of his own heart.Ā
his hands shake as he stands in front of the trainers, clutching the mic so tightly his knuckles turn white. thereās only one person in his mind as he lets his head hang for a moment, preparing himself to begin. it takes a moment to relax, trying to stop his breathing shaking, before he begins.Ā
and i hate to say i love you
when it's so hard for me
and i hate to say i want you
when you make it so clear
you don't want me
the true emotion is crystal clear in every word he sings, voice slow, but strong. itās the perfect song for him at this point in his life, he thinks. itās as easy as breathing to put his entire heart and soul into the song, because in a way itās as if heās finally speaking up about how he feels, even if itās indirectly, and even if the people listening might not truly realise that the song outlines everything thatās making ten hurt these days.Ā
i'd never ask you 'cause deep down i'm certain i know what you'd say
you'd say, "i'm sorry, believe me, i love you but not in that way."
itās hard to hold back tears at the line that cements in tenās beliefs that once again, his hearts going to be broken, and heāll be left a tiny pile of shattered pieces, forgotten for others happiness. his voice trembles slightly, but it adds to the emotion of the song, the softness broken at perfect points by the overwhelming sadness that clings to the melody.Ā
And I hate to say I need you
I'm so reliant
I'm so dependent
I'm such a fool
itās true, he thinks, a sad smile gracing his lips as he sings the lyrics that feel like his own; he really is a fool. you think heād have learnt form the first time that you donātĀ fall for your friends, especially not when theyāre boys. you donāt give your heart to someone who will never keep it safe, and never acknowledge itās fragility. yet he still canāt control his desires. he canāt stop the recurring dreams of that night after the party, when warm lips made him feel wantedĀ - the dreams that leave him in tears when he awakens.Ā
when you're not there,
i find myself singing the blues.
can't bear,
can't face the truth
itās why ten canāt tell him. he canāt stand to hear those words, to have his tiny grain of hope shattered along with every other part of him heād let fall by the wayside. if he can pretend he has a chance, maybe he can hold onto the heart heād spent months gluing back together piece by jagged piece, that still has a few tiny pieces missing, lost among the debris of the innocence of his first love.Ā
you will never know that feeling
you will never see through these eyes
thereās almost a resentment in the lyrics that make ten want to give a humourless laugh, because itās true. he feels like heās completely alone, while his friends fall in love, while they smile at their partners, hold hands, and live in bliss. theyāre living in the light, while heās stuck in shadow, constantly stabbed by those broken pieces of his heart he can never manage to glue back together with the rest of what heās salvaged.Ā
heās alone in his pain.Ā
i'd never ask you 'cause deep down i'm certain i know what you'd say
you'd say, "i'm sorry, believe me, i love you but not in that way."
you'd say, "i'm sorry, believe me, I love you but not in that way."
heās barely holding back tears as he reaches the last line of the song, and his voice nearly breaks with emotion. thereās not enough of him left to be concerned for the judgement of the trainers watching. every shred of him is lost in the emotion that floods him like the tears threatening to spill.
as the song comes to an end, and he lets his head hang, arm falling to the his side as he takes a moment to compose himself, lifting a hand to hurriedly press his thumb and middle finger to the inner corners of his eyes to try and prevent the tears escaping. with a thick swallow he lifts his head and forces and smile, bowing to the trainers and thanking them, in a slightly weaker voice, for listening.Ā
kibum avoids the royal building. he doesnāt want to walk those halls, doesnāt want to look to the center of the building and see the garden growing there, doesnāt want to see the willow tree his name has been carved in for over three years. he doesnāt want to remember all the people who used to walk those halls with him, doesnāt want to think about all the silent promises he made as he crossed their names out of the bark on the tree.Ā
so he spends all his training time in the seocho complex, stretching himself between worrying about what heāll do for evals, worrying about what heāll do about the sphere thing, and worrying about what the other royal boys will do about the sphere thing. he spends a lot of time worrying, so by the time he does get time on his own with rachel, he just settles into her arms and sleeps, or when insomnia takes over, as it so often does, listens to her tell him about her day.Ā
he takes whatever breaks he can from all that worrying, and he appreciates the chance to enjoy the time alone with her, to watch the way her lips move and their bedroomās lamplight glints off her hair.Ā
( heāll have to give her up if he takes this chance, if sphere decides they want to debut him. sheās just one more thing heāll be able to add to the list of things he sacrificed for his own success.
at night, when sheās fallen asleep in his arms and he still lies awake in the moonlight, he wishes, more than anything, that he could have both -- that he could debut without having to give up any of the home heās found in her. )
he knows heās stretched too thin, knows heās worrying about too many things, what with trying to write a rap for his evaluation while thinking about what heāll do about sphere and also worrying after dongmin and jaehyun, both of whom he knowsĀ arenāt doing well in the face of this huge decision.Ā
heās tired, and gentle, happy moments with rachel, dongmin, jaehyun, or all three -- like when they all made him a cake for his birthday and they had a little party -- make him almost want to give it all up, because those moments feel so nice and easy. they remind him of his time so long ago with luminosity, but for once those memories arenāt tinged with longing or resentment; theyāre a reminder that heās had this kind of love before, and that it exists in his future too.Ā
he just hates that it canāt exist in his present -- not if he takes this opportunity and finally accomplishes what heās been working towards for more than three years.Ā
the decision isnāt really a decision -- he knew immediately when he heard that he wanted to try, that he couldnāt let this opportunity pass, not when royal is about to debut a girl group and itās impossible to say if heāll even still be of considerable age before they decide to debut a boy group.Ā
the only question is of whether dongmin and jaehyun will do it too, because the thought of leaving either of them behind makes kibum want to throw up. that also reminds him of luminosity, but of the aftermath: of the feeling of abandonment, of feeling like there was no one left in the world who truly cared about him. and when he thinks of jaehyunās relationship with his parents, or of how dongmin was literally kicked outĀ less than a month ago, he canāt let himself even consider doing that to them.Ā
he isnāt selfish anymore, and he isnāt working for only his own dream. he needs to be there to support his boys, too -- but if they decide they donāt want to leave royal, then he doesnāt know what heāll end up doing. itāll come down to choosing between his career and them, and he honestly doesnāt know which one he would choose.Ā
so he doesnāt worry about that. that isnāt a problem he has to face right now, so he leaves it. he has enough to worry about for now.Ā
( and oh boy, is he worrying. )
he manages to write his own rap for the eval, writing one long verse that, when he times himself, lasts just over the one-minute minimum. he writes about striving for success, describes a vision of running, constantly running, with a hand outstretched, but itās as if things hold him back, or trip him up, or even as he gets closer to the goal, the road gets longer.Ā
he writes about the frustration of watching others give up, and of wanting to give up himself. of wanting to live an easier life, pursue a different dream. but there is no other dream.Ā
that line always makes him think of rachel, of the way his heart skips a beat every time she smiles, of how content he feels in their apartment with their pets and the lost boys they seem to have adopted. there is no other dream. that line feels like a lie, because there is, now. there is another dream, one where he can settle down with rachel and live a happy, peaceful life teaching dance, maybe acting in musicals or modeling.Ā
so he modifies the line. if i did anything else, iād never forgive myself.Ā
heās here. heās got the opportunity; heās worked for three years towards this moment. if he gave it up, even for the happy home heās found, he would never be able to live with himself. he would always askĀ āwhat if,ā would never be satisfied in his life because he could have had more.Ā
i fight to avoid regrets, to avoidĀ āwhat ifā
i fight against the frustration, i fight with determination
i fight for everyone who canāt anymore
i fight because if i didnāt, i could never be satisfied
iāve been on this path for too long to stop fighting now.Ā
his notes are full of ideas scrawled and crossed out until he ended up with lines he was satisfied with, squeezed in between notes and scribbles and barely legible to anyone but him. he kept intending to transfer them to a clean page while he was practicing, but never brought himself to do it. after all, he could read them well enough, and he kind of likes the look of the page so full of ink. it reminds him of his own mind, and makes a note on the next blank page of the book to write aboutĀ āa page full of ink.ā
when he finally stands in front of the panel and starts rapping, itās more of a relief than anything. heās just glad to finally be getting this over with -- itās just one less thing to be worried about.Ā
the lines fall from his lips easily, after more than a week of working on the lyrics and intently practicing under the guidance of the very coaches judging him now. he raps his lyrics, a flame of pride warming his chest at the thought that he made this. without him, these words, this rhythm, would have never existed. these ideas would never have been expressed, and even if this is just a private evaluation and itās impossible to know if anyone will ever actually hear this verse, heās still proud of it, because itās his.Ā
itās a contradiction, like he often feels he is: the beat ( made during a very stressful day with one of his coaches in the recording studio ) is gentle but strong. the words are soft but still intimidating, still powerful. the lyrics themselves are a declaration of strength and determination, but still carry a subtext of uncertainty -- that idea of what if iām not enough, what if iām just wasting my timeĀ that isnāt explicitly written, but is hidden between the lines and within kibumās voice as he raps the lines.Ā
as heās performing, he feels nothing but focus on donāt fuck up, youāll mess up the whole thingĀ and pride at the fact that he created this from nothing.Ā
when itās over, he feels relieved, but also exhausted, as if he just bared his soul to these coaches who donāt give a shit, and now he has to recover emotionally from that tender moment.Ā
after itās over, he leaves the seocho complex and goes to the royal building for the first time in almost two weeks. itās time, he thinks, to face the decisions heās been avoiding.Ā
