I finished The Deep!
Wow. This book had my emotions running all around!!
Yetu holds the memories of her ancestors for her people, the wajinru who live in the deep ocean are the descendants of pregnant African enslaved women who were thrown overboard by slave owners.
🌍
The topic of lost memories has been something that has haunted me for what seems like all of my life. I think I have shared this story but I became paranoid once when I was little that I didn't know what my past life was. I didn't know who I was where I came from, if I had a spouse, if I had children, and why couldn't I remember? This of course launched me into my own current family history. What did my ancestors have to go through for me to be here, who were they, what culture did they come from? It pains me to not have that memory or ability to trace who every person was.
🌍
"She didn't know what came from instinct and what came from the History and echoes of rememberings."
🌍
The memories become too much for Yetu to handle alone, so through the story we learn more about her and other historians and the history of the wajinru and swim with Yetu as she makes decisions for herself and for her people.
🌍
I chose to read this book after watching a YouTube video from @bookishrealm. She did a black mermaid project where she read books about black mermaids and I learned so much! I also cried through most of the video haha. When she was talking about this book I had to pick it up. This book was emotional and so very important. I love it so much!
