âWhen you said, âWe should decorate for Christmas,â I didnât quite equate that with our apartment becoming the physical embodiment of Santaâs Workshop. The North Pole has nothing on us, Betts.â
Jughead wasnât sure what he was looking at. Well he was, but he wasnât sure how it had happened. When heâd left for class & his shift at the library six hours ago, their apartment had looked like the standard one of the perpetually busy & stressed college students they were.Â
What he was currently standing in was a rustic holiday catalog come to lifeâcomplete with Christmas lights placed everywhere in sight, including their bedroom & bathroomâwith Betty standing in the middle of it all, popcorn strand in hand.
âIf I didnât know any better, this would be the part in the Christmas movie where the main character reveals theyâre an elf to the love interest, because itâs the only way to explain how you had time to do all of this.â
âI want us to have our own holiday traditions, Jug. The kind we get to actually enjoy for once. Between my mother having a meticulous blueprint for where every single item in the house has to go & your family-â
â-having a blueprint for disaster.â
âNeither of us have the best track record at this time of year, but now, we can make it our own. Whatever that looks like. Maybe I went a little overboard in my excitement, but turns out being happy does that to a person.â
âNo. Itâs perfect. For us. Now, put me to work, Cooper. This is an equal opportunity decorating household, & I havenât done my fair share. Besides, if you think about it, this really is my season. All the flannel, plaid, & treats to eat? Totally my aesthetic.â

Merry Christmas, @lizzybuggie! I hope you have an amazing day, and a very happy holiday season! Much love, Mari
Summary:
After years of responding to childrenâs letters to Santa together in school, Jughead and Betty find themselves continuing the holiday tradition on their own when Gladys unexpectedly moves her family to Toledo. Until, of course, they meet again.
In the backroom of a New York City post office, of all places.
All the thanks in the world to the amazing @theheavycrownâ for the incredible header. I think Iâve said it before and surely I will say it again but, Sarah is best. This is for prompt #29- A very special present has a fluffy, four-legged surprise inside requested by the lovely @reinhartdeyesâ. Enjoy!
âDo you see anything?â The flashlight shook in Bettyâs hands, biting cold working through her mittens as she tried to illuminate a path for Jughead.
âDo you?â Her husband questioned back from deeper inside the garage.Â
She took a step in, the snow and wind blowing at her back. âIf I had seen anything, Jug, I wouldnât have torn you away from your last-minute wrapping.â
At that he stood, shined his flashlight at her and sighed. âIâm not saying you were hearing things, Betts, but...maybe you were hearing things. Itâs not exactly a nice night.â
The snow had been falling steadily for a couple of hours, turning their very green Christmas Eve into what would undoubtedly be the white Christmas everyone had been dreaming of. âI was not hearing things, Jughead. I heard a very specific sound. It was crying!â
âThen why havenât I heard anything? Weâve been out here for fifteen minutes and all I can hear is your teeth chattering,â he took a step toward a pile of haphazardly stacked boxes, carefully trying to weave his way through the maze in the dark.âBetty, itâs close to midnight,â Jughead took the first box down and set it aside. âItâs nearly blizzarding, and we still have to get everything ready for the morning. Five more minutes and IâmâŚâ
Squeak.Â
âDid you hear that!?â Betty moved closer to her husband.
âNo, I didnât, shockingly enough,â he muttered, heaving another box off the pile. An old plastic dollhouse sat between him and the wall; his boot caught on it as he tried to turn in the dark space. âShit!âÂ

Jughead managed to keep his balance but had apparently stirred something in the darkness.
SQUEAK.
Bettyâs light cut a swath in the dark before them, his boot now purposefully tapping at the dollhouse.
The squeaking amplified; not just in volume but also in frequency.Â
âJughead, if you try to tell me you still donât hear anything Iâm goingâŚâ
âNo, Betty, I hear it. I canât unhear it. I think that if I moveâoh my god.â
Betty rushed over with her flashlight. âWhat? What is it?â
âItâs a little...â Leaning over the dollhouse, after a little bit of a struggle, Jughead pulled up a very small, very loud puff of fur. â...kitty.âÂ
Betty had set her flashlight down on the snowblower before rushing over to her husband and taking the very tiny kitten from his hands. âIt has no tail! Oh my gosh, Jug, we need to go get milk and bottles andââ
âWhoa, whoa, itâs Christmas Eve, Elizabeth,â he said, retrieving their flashlights and walking back to the door.Â
âFine, Forsythe, you take it and Iâll go,â the too-young-to-be-alone kitten is held out in front of her, nearly lost in Bettyâs hands. It was blizzarding now with at least six inches covering the driveway and sidewalks. The one store that was sure to be open was a good thirty minutes away on a good night, but Betty knew that if she continued to look at him in just that way heâd cave. Jughead craned his neck back, gloved hands pulling his well-worn beanie back over his head.
He sighed. âGo start a fire, get it warm or find something for it to sleep in. Iâll take care of everything else IF you finish my wrapping for me.â
âDeal!â Betty lunged forward, cradling the small creature to her chest as she kissed her husband in thanks. Unzipping her jacket, Betty stuffed the kitten inside and ran off to the house, her less than enthusiastic husband following behind her.Â
âIâm gonna start the car, maybe shovel a little bit, youâre not listening to me at all so Iâm just gonna go and hope to God I make it back before daybreak.â
Betty waved him off, too busy trying to figure out where to put their newest little friend for the night. The door closed in the distance, taking a resigned Jughead with it when she spied the tote full of presents by the tree. Of course, not one of them was wrapped. She nodded to herself in acceptance, she could make short work of that and have a place for the kitten to sleep. The kitten, however, had different plans.Â
âFire, right,â she mumbled to herself, setting the kitten down in an attempt to set up the wood. The small, terrified cat began to cry as soon as her paws hit the hardwood, crawling back up Bettyâs still-booted foot before she could get any logs laid. âOkay, okay, Iâm not going anywhere.â Betty picked up the whining fluff ball and realized it could do with a good cleaning, itâs bright blue eyes searching the room for something familiar and only finding Betty.Â
Softly she smiled as she kicked her boots off next to the fireplace. They made their way up the stairs, kitten firmly pressed to her chest so she could grab throw blankets and old towels from the linen closet. It was careful dance to not instigate the kitten into alerting the neighborhood of their presence.Â
It was well after two but the fire was lit, the kitten was bathed and currently curled up in an old blanket in the tote and all the presents wrapped and arranged under the tree. Betty was starting to fill the stockings when the kitchen door blew open, bringing with it her snow-covered husband with multiple bags of supplies.Â
âJesus, Jug. You look like the abominable snowman!â Laughing, she steps into the room, garlands still lit in the windows and takes the bags.
He shakes off the snow, mostly on his still laughing wife, and drops his coat over the back of a kitchen chair. âWell, itâs a blizzard, Betty. Iâd say a good foot of snow has fallen since I left.â
Grimacing as the bags transfer from him to her, Betty sets them down quickly before she grabbed Jugheadâs slippers and threw them to him. âWonder if weâll be leaving the house then.â
âHopefully not. Which is why I also grabbed extra food,â he dropped into the recliner, pulled the lever on the side and groaned.
Betty was getting the morning coffee ready when the crying started.
âUh-oh. Someone knows the foodâs here,â Jughead sing-songed from his reclined state. Betty just smiled, dealt with the groceries and checked out the directions on the kitten milk replacement. One of the many bags he walked in with also held some toys, a bed, and a collar with a bell that looked far too big for the hungry kitten in her living room.Â
âJust like a Jones already,â Betty muttered to herself while readying the bottle. She grabbed the rest of the kittenâs gear and walked into the living room where the scene before her had her heart catching in her throat as she spied her husband with the tiny cat curled up on his chest.Â
She pulled a blanket from the sofa and draped it over their two sleeping forms, Jugheadâs gentle snoring provided the soundtrack as she finished the last of the stockings and ensured the fire was out. The bottle was sat next to him on the side table in case it woke, but, knowing her husband, theyâd be out until first light.
âMooooooomm, come on!â In his excitement, their five-year-old son Christopher practically pulled his mother down the stairs Christmas morning. He had been sitting on the edge of her bed for nearly an hour, prodding her to wake, but having gone to bed past two, Betty managed to convince him to wait for his sister.
It was just after six-thirty when the three descended, Jughead still asleep in the recliner by the tree, the kitten now nestled into the crook of his neck.Â
âWhatâs on Daddy?â Adeline asked, peeking from behind her mother.
Betty placed a hand on her daughterâs shoulders and guided her and their son over to where the kitten had begun to rouse. âThat is your very special Christmas present.â
As if on cue, the kitten began itâs wailing, so loudly that Jughead nearly flew out of his chair and into the tree. Unable to contain their excitement any more, the kids ran from their mother to the small grey puffball that cried out from their yawning fatherâs embrace.Â
âWhat is it?â Christopher asked.
âItâs a kitten!â Adeline pushed in front and climbed up the chair to sit on the arm, pulling the cat off her dad and holding it up for her brother to see.Â
Christopher looked at it confused. âUh, whereâs the rest of it?â
âItâs a baby, bud, weâre going to have to take real good care of it too because weâre itâs family now.â Jughead sat up in the chair and pulled his son up on the other arm.Â
âWhyâs it squeaking?âÂ
âAnd where is its tail?âÂ
âThat squeaking is because itâs probably very, very hungry. Your daddy fell asleep before it could eat. Do you two want to help feed it?â Betty walked back into the living room, cup of coffee in hand that Jughead took from her gladly. She swapped the old formula for new and handed the bottle to her husband. âAnd we donât know, sweetie. It doesnât look like anything happened so maybe she was just born without one.â
Jughead fed the kitten who greedily slurped down her bottle as his kids watched enrapt. âWeâll find out when we take her to the vet?â
Eyebrow raised in question, Betty turned to her husband. âHer?â
âJust a hunch,â he shrugs as the bottle falls from the kittenâs mouth. It mewled loudly, pawing at Jugheadâs practiced hand before the bottle found its way back to where it was most needed.Â
âDo you guys want to open any presents?â
âNot right now, Mom,â Christopher said mesmerized.Â
Addy waved her off and laid her head on her fatherâs shoulder. âMaybe later.â
Betty nodded, swooning at her husband before grabbing her phone and uploading a picture to InstaGlam. Her family was completely caught up in the kitten with the tree glowing behind them. Cinnamon and pine and snow in the air, Betty, though extremely tired, had never felt more blessed. The picture was pretty, but it would never do justice to what she was feeling at that moment.Â
Meow-y Christmas from the Joneses! Baby kitty is currently nameless, but the kids have just met it so I doubt it will be that way for long.
Itâs Christmas Eve (and they can see weâre in love)
When Alice Cooper shames Betty for being 25 and alone on Christmas, Veronica sparks the idea of a faux-beau for the holidays in the form of none other than Jughead Jones.

Happy Holidays!! This fic was crafted with Bughead love for @catthecoder! For @bugheadsecretsanta she requested a trope fest of fake dating with a healthy dose of pining sprinkled on top!
If you havenât already, check out @catthecoder stories on AO3 as well! Sheâs super talented!
I owe tons and tons of thanks to @jandjsalmon. Her editing is the absolute best and she made so many wonderful suggestions to help enhance this faux-beau holiday tale!
This fic also fits with @riverdale-events Reindeer Games Prancer Theme.
âď¸ My sweeties as snow people, originally doodled to brighten a friendâs day. Jugheadâs nose is a carrot, his hair is black licorice, and his mouth is a hooked hamburger patty. Bettyâs hair it spaghetti, her nose is a strawberry, and I like to imagine her lips are chocolate chips! Whatever theyâre made of (or making together), Bughead is a gift to all of us! Happy new year! âď¸

âHello?â Jugheadâs very groggy voice came through the phone.
âJug.â Betty, on the other hand, was all but vibrating with excitement but was intent on making sure that Jughead was actually awake before she started raving at him at 7am.
âBetty? What time is it?â She could practically see him sleepily rubbing his eyes with his messy hair and flushed cheeks as well as that adorable face he always pulled when he woke up. If he was next to her right now, she would have woken him up with little feather kisses and maybe some hot cocoa too but no, he was at home, in his own bed and, instead, he was woken up by his ringing phone.
âEarly but that doesnât matter.â
Now she could see his furrowed brows whilst he unsuccessfully smoothed his hair, trying to work out what was going on. Jughead was quite possibly the most intelligent person she had ever met but not first thing in the morning. When he had just woken up, Jughead was lucky if he remembered his own name - he was not a morning person.
âHave you seen? No, I guess you probably havenât seen.â She paused for a moment, her brain working too fast for her mouth to keep up. âJughead look outside, open the curtains and look outside.â
Jughead obliged, still at a loss for what Betty was going on about but his questions were answered as he was promptly blinded when he pulled back one curtain.
âHoly shit.â He whispered, his eyes not believing what was in front of him. Every inch of the front garden was covered in a thick coat of snow, nothing was untouched. It was beautiful.Â
Snow was still falling relentlessly, the clouds seemingly never-ending and, if it continued at this rate, there would be a good foot of snow within the hour.
âI know, itâs absolutely gorgeous isnât it. You know what this means, right?â Betty had now started bouncing in her seat, her eager tone a contrast to her boyfriendâs monotone.
âWeâre not going anywhere.â
âThe car isnât going anywhere and schoolâs closed.â This was what was making Betty most excited, anyway to get out of that hellhole for a day was more than welcomed by her.
âSo, I wondered if you wanted to go sledding before we get completely snowed in?â
âIâll be five minutes.â
***
Lucky for them, Betty and Jugheadâs neighbourhood was right next to a large hilltop field - the perfect place for sledding.
After picking Betty up at her house, Jughead led her to that very field, both of them dragging a colourful plastic sled that had not been used for years; Riverdale did not get snow very often but, when they got a coating, it was hardly ever this thick. Betty had had to dig through the garage for ten minutes before she had found the cheap sleds hidden away in a cardboard moving box.
The pair took turns pushing each other down the hill but were struggling to pick up great speed - thatâs when Jughead suggested they went down together.
Jughead balanced the sled half-over the crest of the hill before setting himself down on the far end of the seat, using his arms to anchor the sled in place as Betty ungracefully climbed onto his lap.
âAre you ready?â At Bettyâs nod, he tucked his legs under hers, bent awkwardly to stop his limbs overspilling. âAll arms and legs inside the vehicle.â He announced as he began to push the pair over the edge of the hill.
They went barreling down in the snow but overturned before they had reached the bottom. They fell unceremoniously into the foot-deep snow, rolling with the momentum they had built, before finally coming to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Betty was tucked into Jugheadâs chest, his arms surrounding her as he had caught her and pulled her into his arms as they came off the sled, trying to keep her injury-free.
âThat went well.â Betty commented dryly before silence overtook them, slightly in shock from the ordeal.
After a minute of lying there Bettyâs teeth began to chatter, her muscles trembling, and she pressed herself tighter into Jugheadâs bodyheat although the proximity did not help much due to his sodden clothes.
âHot cocoa?â Jughead asked.
âSure.â As Betty pulled away, Jughead kissed the tip of her bright red nose.
