#rival lovers

The city below pulsed with light, a heartbeat of neon and noise. But up on the rooftop, the world was quiet.

Rumi leaned against the railing, her blade strapped across her back, the tips of her hair still damp from the earlier rain. She stared out at the horizon, where the Han River cut through the darkness like silver. She didn’t turn when she felt Jinu step beside her. She always knew when it was him — the way the air seemed to still, like even the shadows held their breath.

“I thought you hated heights,” she said, her voice soft.

Jinu gave a low chuckle. “I do. But I like you more.”

That earned him a glance. She tried not to smile, but failed.

“You’re getting better at the flirting thing.”

“I’ve had a good teacher.” His gaze held hers, steady and unguarded. “You keep saving my life, Rumi.”

She turned back toward the city, her expression unreadable. “You saved mine first. Don’t forget that.”

“I haven’t.” He hesitated. “But this isn’t about demon fights or missions. I’m talking about… this.” He gestured between them.

Silence stretched. The only sound was the hum of the city below, distant and blurred.

“You’re not just the reason I fight,” Jinu continued, voice lower now. “You’re the reason I want to keep living once the fight’s over.”

Rumi swallowed hard. Her armor wasn’t just physical — she wore it in her sarcasm, her cool detachment, her refusal to let herself feel too much. But with him… she never had to pretend.

And so, she dropped the act.

“Say that again,” she whispered.

“I want to live, Rumi. With you.”

This time, she looked at him fully. He was all sharp edges and soft eyes, his hand hovering near hers but not touching — not yet.

She took his hand, fingers lacing between his. Her voice was barely audible.

“Then live. But don’t make me fight this war alone.”

“I won’t,” he promised.

He leaned in slowly, as if giving her the chance to move away — but she didn’t. When their lips met, it wasn’t fireworks or music or magic.

It was something quieter. Deeper.
