Hawk's suggested remedy of medicinal marijuana has kept her steady for another few days. Well enough to have friends over and share in the spoils of their baking -- Benji and Willow sit amongst blankets and pillows on the floor of her living room, a small plate of brownie crumbs settled on the side of the coffee table. She's taken great interest in his hair, in combing it back with her nails while the fan blows warm air over their goose-pimpled skin.

"A story?" She's a writer, after all. She should be able to swing a story, even stoned. Willow smiles, her idle combing pauses while she thinks of something.

"...Once, there was a little boy who lived in the woods at the edge of a great Victorian mansion. He lived off of the berries and the plants he was able to forage and made friends with all of the creatures in the woodland, big and small, as he went about his daily life. The owls taught him how to have a keen eye, and the foxes taught him how to charm even the most timid of mice... One day, the little boy looked out toward the edge of the forest, where the wilderness met the manicured garden of that Victorian house. He had never seen shelter so grand and large in all his little life, and was shocked to find there was a little girl standing in the middle of the open green, looking in.

She wanted to run away, he could tell because she had in her hands a little bag of belongings and tears in her eyes -- eyes which were looking out into the forest with such determination that she almost missed him entirely until he made a small sound, a greeting he used to use on the foxes, on the wolves.

He couldn't speak, you see, nobody taught him how to do that, so all they had were their eyes and their little noises -- which the little girl tried to replicate to no avail. Her tongue was tied with vowels and consonants, not the language of the animals, but she was curious...

“ You best make it quick, boy! I’m a busy woman! I have places to be. ” those places being a restaurant to order take out, a hot shower and the soft satin of her bedsheets. She’s tired! It’s been a looooooong day already, and her patience is paper thin on a GOOD day.
