From the highest highs to the lowest lows, we are examining mystery storytelling, mystery solving, and the elements of making a detective for cinema. In this episode, we're talking Sherlock Holmes (2009), the first of the Guy Ritchie Holmes series, in a conversation about our own expectations going into the film in 2009, show-vs-tell in mysteries, hitting the correct balance of action and mystery in a very action-heavy action/mystery, and just why Jude Law's Watson works so very much for us as a Watson.

Not them trying to trick us. But also, not Sherlock telling someone to bill it to John 😭 you gonna let a broke man handle bills?

I would've loved to see the title sequence, from the looks of it, they were gonna give us the rundown of Sherlock's and John's adventure together, starting from their younger days and i think i see The Blue Carbuncle case mention? There's more but omg

And then there's this, I found it fascinating (and tbh very relatable) because it gave an insight as to what makes Sherlock comfortable and uneasy.

There's a type of noise that he would feel comfortable with and ngl i relate to it so much. Places that demands too much of me trying to be still is too much, i had to zone out or twitch or move but places that has so much energy is exactly where i find comfort. "The ring is the only place where his mind stops racing." Sherlock, my beloved!

BOHEMIA MENTION! 😭 In the spirit of Irene Adler, apparently the hotel scene was a bit more different BUT there was something that caught my attention and it flabbered my gast.

Apparently Irene checked into the hotel room as a man and we get this gem; "What were you doing consorting with a married business traveller in his hotel room-" a SCANDAL I TELL YOU, shouda been JOHN- anyways

This would've broken my heart ngl

Some more deets that i actually love because while John kept telling himself that he wanted sensibility, he obviously craves action. Bro legit struggles to pack because the mystery was delicious (this is foreplay) But what I love most was the end. Mary knew John at this point, knew that no matter what, he would always crave adventure and this last part would've really been beautiful.

For Holmes/Watson I am spoiled for choice, but here are a couple of my old favorites:

For Dunalqua's Into the Fire, I wrote a rec for it once which read: "The slight, graceful gestures, the glancing looks, the teasing smiles. Walking together down a busy street or a country lane, leaning toward each other, sharing a meal, touching a shoulder, lighting a cigarette, falling asleep. This vid wraps you up in the sheer warmth and beauty of these men's shared lives and the joy they take in each other and then unrepentantly punches you in the face with Reichenbach angst and walks away, its job well done." And I stand by that :)

For the Ritchie verse, gabygal7's Bedroom Hymns catches the wild energy and the implicit trust between them -- that winning combination of action-adventure and domesticity, the way they make sacrifices for one another, and the way yearning inhabits even their closeness:

And swinging back around to Granada, Di Wey's Read My Mind is probably my all-time favorite, it's so full of joie de vivre! Posted 17 years ago, it is elderly in vid years, but still a pure delight :)
