Confound it, he had a point, but Evy’s pride wouldn’t allow her to back down so soon. “Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she began, “as if you haven’t willingly followed me into danger time and time again for the past decade! And in case you’ve forgotten, it was my ideas that saved you from the noose the day we first met. I am sorry I worried you, but I don’t appreciate being spoken to in such a manner.”

"Mmm,” Evy agreed. “A warm bath and a nice, long nap never sounded better.” Honestly, Rick’s chest was as good a napping place as any bed; between the safety and comfort of his arms and the exhaustion that had finally begun to take its toll after their escape from the crumbling temple, she was on the verge of nodding off herself. It was curiosity that kept her awake. He’d saved her life, stayed by her side when he could have left, proven himself to be both a good man and an amazing kisser despite her first impressions, yet she still knew very little about him. “What will you do next? I hope this won’t be the last we see of you.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Evy said, laughing as Rick pulled her closer to him. “But I’m quite sure we won’t find any.” Her arms came up to encircle her husband’s neck as she added with a grin mirroring his, “Unless the ones in the Capuchin Catacombs decide to take a boat over from Sicily.”
Evy did want to explore said catacombs one day, but it could wait. The whole family deserved a relaxing, mummy-free vacation after the nightmare at Ahm Shere, Rick especially. “No digging or camel rides,” she promised. “But I think we should probably hold on to our clothing for Alex’s sake.”
"What the hell were you thinking?! Oh, that's right, you never think! You just dive in head-first and expect me to save you!"
"I beg your pardon?" Evy glared at her husband, taken aback by the anger in his tone. "Perhaps I was rash, but don't pretend you've never acted rashly, Rick O'Connell. Or shall I remind you of all the times I've saved your life?"

"Do you really think he's going to show up?" Evy asked her brother doubtfully as they made their way through the throng of travelers that filled Giza Port. They'd booked passage for three on the riverboat Sudan, but as the third member of their party was a criminal, the chances of him upholding his end of their agreement seemed slim to none. How did she know O'Connell hadn't simply lied about having been to Hamunaptra to save his own hide?
"Yes, undoubtedly, knowing my luck," Jonathan answered, surprising her a little. "He may be a cowboy, but I know the breed. His word is his word."
Evy could think of a few choice words to describe the boorish American they'd met at Cairo Prison, but "cowboy" wasn't among them. "Well, personally, I think he's filthy, rude, a complete scoundrel. I don't like him one bit." She'd been sorely tempted to let O'Connell hang when he forced that kiss on her through the prison bars. Her stomach turned at the mere thought of relying on the help of that degenerate, that animal, that--
"Anyone I know?"
Both Carnahans turned at the familiar voice behind them. "Oh," Evy muttered sheepishly, so dumbfounded by the sight of the handsome, well-dressed man facing her that she had to set down her bags. O'Connell's formerly long, scraggly brown hair was freshly cut short, his face clean-shaven, and he wore a khaki suit and white button-down shirt that perfectly fit his tall, broad frame. His brow rose beneath the light fringe that fell over his forehead, and Evy realized he was waiting for her to say something more. "Um, hello," was all she could manage. How could this be the same man?
"Smashing day to start an adventure, eh, O'Connell?" Jonathan remarked, patting the American on the chest companionably and giving his hand a generous shake.
"Yeah," O'Connell agreed in a decidedly less cheerful tone than her brother's. "Yeah, smashing." He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his wallet, and Jonathan hastily assured him, "Oh, no, no, I'd never steal from a partner--partner."
That got a chuckle out of O'Connell. "That reminds me, no hard feelings about the, uh--" He mimed a punch.
"Oh, no, no, happens all the time."
While the two men had been conversing, Evy had finally managed to pick her jaw up off the floor. O'Connell might be handsome, but that didn't mean he was trustworthy. "Mr. O'Connell, can you look me in the eye and guarantee me that this isn't all some kind of a flim-flam? Because if it is, I am warning you, I will--"
"You're warning me?" O'Connell interrupted, sounding as if he couldn't believe she had the nerve to speak to him that way. Admittedly, Evy wasn't quite sure what she would do if O'Connell was trying to cheat her, but it wouldn't end well for the American. She'd dreamed of finding Hamunaptra her entire life; having that dream snatched away would crush her.
"Lady, let me put it this way," O'Connell continued, his tone dead serious. "My whole damn garrison believed in this so much that without orders, they marched halfway across Libya and into Egypt to find that city, and when we got there, all we found was sand and blood."
He spoke with such conviction that any lingering doubts fled Evy's mind. This man really had been to Hamunaptra. She had so many questions, but before she could begin to ask them, O'Connell spoke again. "I'll get your bags." He picked up her suitcases and turned to board the boat, leaving Evy staring after him with a mixture of awe and curiosity.
She'd almost forgotten Jonathan was there until she heard him say, "Yes, yes, you're right. Filthy, rude, complete scoundrel, nothing to like there at all."
Surprisingly, Evy couldn't muster a retort or even glare at her brother. O'Connell had her intrigued; there was no point in denying it. She wasn't yet willing to admit that her first impression of him had been wrong, but one thing was certain: there was more to the man than the brashness he'd displayed at the prison, and that was a discovery she looked forward to almost as much as the one awaiting them at Hamunaptra.

Not my muse, but I would love to see Evy's Ardeth impression if you're up for it!
Send ™ and my muse will do a poor imitation of yours.
"You must leave this place; it is cursed!...Sorry, force of habit. As-salaam 'alykum. I am Ardeth Bay, leader of the Medjai. When I am not too busy protecting ancient sites and preventing apocalypses, I enjoy deep conversations and caring for animals, such as Horus, my best and most clever friend. A close human friend of the female variety also informs me that I have amazing hair."
Once you get this, you have to say five things you like about yourself, publicly. Then you send this to ten of your favourite followers (positivity is cool!!)🌈🌈 (disregard this if you've done it too recently or you don't want to do it, of course!)
1. My cooking and baking. I'm no top chef, but I think I make some damn tasty meals more often than not.
2. My sense of humour. I think I do relatively well at making people laugh. And I can often find the silver lining even in darker moments.
3. My patience. I have a very deep well of patience I can draw from and it takes a lot for me to reach the end of my tether.
4. My imagination. Not just keeping myself entertained with dream worlds, but my ability to look at a space and reimagine how it can be improved or rearranged.
5. I'm struggling to come up with a fifth thing, idk, but maybe I should go with something physical, haha. My eyes. They may not work very well and I've always needed glasses, but I think they are a pretty colour.
.
And thanks @accidentallylita for also sending me this ask, I think I will stick to answering it just the once 😁
